Just tried this out myself - wonderful!

Now that we have some real Amiga samples (i always thought ST drives sounded different to Amiga ones) I cannot see why Toni cannot incorporate Hal and Chipmunks wonderful work in to version 0.8.24

I agree with some previous poster that it's a bit too loud now.

The stepping noise [tac - tac - tac...] is very accurate now - very good work!

The motor sounds better, however now it sounds as if the disk is already very "used".
I mean, if the drive does these "pulses", it's a clear indication of an aged disk that is almost about to "die".
Sound goes "trr(.)rrr(.)rrr(.)rrr(.)rrr..." The silence (about 50 ms) is because while spinning, it always has to get past a tiny error (.) on the magnetic surface.
I hope my stupid explanations did explain the matter clearly enough.

get the point
that'll be my fault
i used an aged disk
(most of em i have are)
the loudness is however very true to my a500 drive
guess i have to find a better disk now and start over again

Too loud!?

I think it's too quiet, or soft... Perhaps I'm wrong because I'm only referring to how I remember it to sound (and I haven't heard a real Amiga floppydrive in 10 years!!! ) but I want it to be really noisy - it's music to my ears . I felt the music of the games drowned the sound of the virtual drive... Would be cool to be able to adjust the volume of the drive vs the music in some way. Oh well I know I'm asking too much...

BTW isn't it kinda cool that it sounds like a really old and used disk? Doesn't it add some to the "retro" feel?

In any case, I LOOOVE this feature! Good work, hal & chipmunk

It's difficult to tell If the sounds are too loud of too quiet. I owned three Amiga 500 and each had another loudness.

EDIT: Just checked the new version. The sound is wonderful now. But it's difficult for me to tell wether it's too loud or too quiet so I think it's better to leave it as it is now .

For outrun the floppy seems to quiet. But in Honda RVF it seems to loud. Can't you also insert volume control for the floppy sound ?

A BUG, A BUG !!!!!
No really, there's something that annoyes me and I don't know if it's already mentioned somewhere.

Some games turn the Audio filter of the Amiga on or off. But that also influences the floppy drive sound. Try it with Zeewolf. The sound is first normal (damped) but when you see the logo and the music starts it's crystal clear. You can also check this in WinUAE by enabling and disabling the filter emulation.

Hi Konrad,

Could you try this with "Cruise for a corpse"? I think I came across it intermittedly but it could be my copy or settings. I had my filter off at the time.

Everything works fine, theres no hiss staying in the background. But please, don't tell me you mean the crunching of the planks of the ship .

Half the 'beef' was probably caused by the resonance of the floppy drive case, and more so, the A500 case.

I don't think you'll be able to get it much better than this, except for possibly a bit of EQ tweaking.

If this feature will be added with a tickbox in the 'official' winUAE distri, it might be an idea to have some control over the volume, so you can adjust it as one sees fit. I'd like this feature, but just at a low volume so you know there's still some drive activity in full screen mode with the leds turned off....

Chipmunk, kewl version you built there...!

Wow chipmunk, I have used your version a few hours now and I don't want to go back to the version without the disksound!! I just wanted to say once again, good work! It really brings back that vintage feel and it's as if my good ol' amiga is grinding here

Hey all, here's tonights build, sounds alot better, but a little quieter, but the sound is no longer filtered when it shouldnt be, and the clipping no longer occurs either.

As always, let me know

You can grab it here .

Chipmunk, word of advise: rename the new builds with some numbers or something, because I always think I'm downloading the same old binary.

winuae0.8.23.driveclick-030112.zip or something like that (03 01 12 being the date, for example)
