Unhappy SFS file system and a network that actually works!

Me at this point ->

I'm returning to the scene after 10 years of absence and...

I have a stock A1200 with an 2.1Gb HDD with 2 partitions [ 100mb / 2Gb ] with 3.0 ROM and WB 3.1
I can't managed to format with SFS file system and about my Network, i've managed to install AmiTCP and i can ping either my miggy at the PC and ping the PC on the miggy but Genesis refuses to run... I tried Samba but i can't install it...

erm... help?

update: Aexplorer works fine w/ serial but with the NIC i get an ' program filed (error #000000004) '

that's exactly the same as my set-up and I have been experiencing exactly the same problems. There seems to be no easy answer to this as the many recent threads on this subject have demonstrated.

Hopefully someone will soon respond to the FAQ requests and provide some unified step-by-step guidelines to acheiving this kind of network / transfer set-up.

Figures crossed..

Hmmz... this is weird... I'm using a A1200 with PCMCIA network card as well (and SFS)... without any trouble at all. You might want to spitt out some more details perhaps.

Well if you have no problems perhaps you can contribute to the FAQ and help other users. Seems to be fair few people saying they are successfully doing it but not much in the way of contributions - so come on everyone - free lollies to all who help!*

Like i said, a 10 year absence made me a newbie in the matter... what it's the abuse necessary tools and updates i must do with a fresh install of wb 3.0/3.1? (since i can't install OS3.5 because of the stock 1200's 3.0 ROM)

You should start with an Accelerator and memory. Get a 68060 with 32 MB.

Then you can start upgrading the software. Begin with NewIcons.

As for the AE crash, which version do you use ? Perhaps upgrading fixed the bug. Or perhaps AmiTCP is the cause. Try Miami instead. Or try Genesis again. Both need MUI to run, so you should install MUI first. Also Genesis replaces AmiTCP with a new version, so you cannot use both.

As an alternative you could try SMBFS to access your PC's drives. And install Samba to access you Amiga's drives from the PC. Download Samba 2.0.7 from www.amigasamba.org and just follow the INSTALL.AMIGA document. It is not too difficult.

I don't think it will solve anything. It will make things faster. And more memory (resp. any fastmem at all) might prevent it from crashing.

Don't you need a minimum of 4MB to run Samba, Genesis and AmiTCP?

As for the Blizzard 030, I've run Samba, SMBFS, Miami DX etc on a 16MB A1200/030 without any problems. Does your accelerator have extra memory?

An 060 is probably overkill unless you want to run Apache and MySQL too.

I know that AmiTCP doesn't need 4mb since i got it running on my A1200, as for the other 2... i really don't know...

I'm using my miggy only for some retro gaming, so isn't a 030 enough to run all whdload games and OS 3.5?

Well... my setup is a Apollo 030/40 with 32mb... it's running OS3.9-2 and using CNET.device and Genesis for networking...

Your problem could be the mixture of Kickstart 3.0 and Workbench 3.1 . I ran like this on my A4000 for a while but I've heard it can cause major problems. Get some proper roms, or switch back to Workbench 3.0.

Oh, I didn't realise this in the first post. Of course it is always a bad idea running a WB version higher than the Kickstart version, with 2.1, 3.5 and 3.9 being the only exceptions.
