Probably a default "failed to load" message. Have you changed the KS, Chip-set, Ram etc. for egg-salad?

Egg salad works with A1200 config, but that's not the point

I'm interested in the meaning of error code reported by Amiga DOS

This is not a complete DOS error message. I shows you only that something failed. Could mean a lot of things.

Perhaps you used "dir" command from OS 2.0+ on OS 1.3.

I got the error in A500 config, yes

This is the StartupSequence

dir ram:
EGGSALAD
endcli

And this is the Dir command found on the disk
(no idea if it's a dir command of OS 2.0)

You probably need KS 2.04 + 1,5 MB ram as a minimum for Egg-Salad.

A500+ with Memory expension works. A500 with KS 2.04, Chip =1 MB, Slow= 512 KB works too.

Try "Version C:dir" in a Shell, and see what version it is.

Code:
$VER: dir 37.5 (4.6.91)
This dir is from Workbench 3.1.

Edit : Also on WB 2.0

Replace "dir" command with OS 1.3 version, add "endcli" command from
OS 1.3 version. Maybe any device can be necessary for RAM too.
