can't seem to prep a CF card anymore (WinUAE)

I've done this before but now I can't figure out what I did to make that work!

1. run winuae as admin
2. add a CF card (using uaehf.device)
3. boot

=> I see the data, it works fine, formatting is OK, good.

Now I'd like to switch to PFS3, so I have to use HDToolbox for that.

First, which version of PFS3 should I choose ? there are several files, which one is the best (filesize, version)

Second, which maxtransfer/etc. should I use? 1FE00, FFFFFF ??

Last (but really annoying), I can't see my CF card on HDtoolbox. I've selected uaehf.device, it doesn't work. I tried to add the CF card using IDE, but it's not even visible through winuae.

I've tried a lot of things (and I was able to prep hard drives, CF cards in the past but now I've completely lost it!) help.

(sorry if this was asked before, I've read a lot of threads here, but still no go)

1FE00 is the one you want
In HDToolbox tooltypes (icon information) set change from scsi.device to uaehf.device

HardFile and CF they must use the same HD Controller (you do not need to do this if you boot the system from Floppy)

If you are preparing the CF for a AMiGA Real use HD Controller Commodore A600/A1200/A4000 IDE

"it doesn't work"?

Most common reason for IDE not working: not using correct Amiga model (chipset extra setting) and/or mismatched KS ROM.

Why would you add anything, when you can start from a real computer in quickstart and work from that base. :-)

No on uses Quickstart to reset already existing "high end" config.

Starting point is usually already existing "A1200" config which most likely uses A4000 ROM and does not have any mainboard specific features enabled.

Seems my use of WinUAE is much more adhoc than what others do with it. ;-)

Still I wonder why you'd make a base config that doesn't exist in the real world when you're making your high end system.

It's more a question of verification, old config are not very compatible and may contain inconsistencies on a new version of WinUAE. Without a conformity CF it will start quietly from WinUAE but it will not start on the Amiga Real

Historic reasons, as usual (before IDE emulation existed or A1200/A4000 ROMs were marked properly etc..). Config files are rarely made from scratch, only adjusted if/when needed.

There are also other "bad configurations", for example Z3 RAM is very rare in real world (it didn't exist in 1990s, it is slow) but most configs use it because it was the first emulated large RAM option and it is still the most flexible RAM option.

thanks Toni, the extra chipset is probably not set. I'll check that. WinUAE is just too powerful, we're forgetting how complex the real amiga world can be.

It's just so frustrating when I was able to do that several times... It's ugly to get old

You may find this tutorial helpful - it's usually my fallback when something doesn't seem to go right. I even altered it for me personally to complete without winUAE. I copied the files I needed to adf and insert into gotek using real floppies for WB and was able to setup a real Amiga using these instructions altered to my scenario.

Okay so I've enabled A1200 chipset, selected A600/A1200/A4000 IDE but what really clicked was ticking "lock" as Amigasystem advised!

Now HDtoolbox can partition the disk, thanks all!

Yes, I got that one, installed it and it works! thanks. I'm not forgetting that anymore. I was using different winuae configs (one for elevated/installations and one without elevation) now I'm using only one, with all proper settings. Basically my issues were:

- A1200 chipset not enabled
- uaehf.device / wrong IDE mode set
- to make it boot on a real amiga I had to reduce slightly the partition size (worked on WinUAE) as I read somewhere here that there's a bug (LBA stuff) when trying to use 4Gb.

Anyway who needs 4Gb in 1994 right?
