256K Amiga 1000 Games
So i've spent the last couple of days testing which games run under the 256K limit of the first A1000 production models before they included the 256K upgrade.
Without going mental on hundreds of games, i only tested the obvious first 18 month releases as listed in Amiga World magazine, and a few other releases from the same publishers just in-case. Here's my finding's, a total of 46 games from 13 publishers. Kickstart needed in brackets (KSXX). Boot to Workbench first (WB). 1985 - 9 --------- Wishbringer (Infocom)(KS1.0) Spellbreaker (Infocom)(KS1.0) Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (Infocom)(KS1.0) Hacker (Activision)(KS1.0) Mindshadow (Activision)(KS1.0) Borrowed Time (Activision)(KS1.0) One On One (Electronic Arts)(KS1.0) Archon (Electronic Arts)(KS1.0) Seven Cities Of Gold, The (Electronic Arts)(KS1.0) 1986 - 25 ----------- Ballyhoo (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Cutthroats (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Deadline (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Enchanter (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Infidel (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Leather Goddesses of Phobos (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Mind Forever Voyaging, A (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.2) Moonmist (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Planetfall (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Seastalker (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Sorcerer (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Starcross (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Suspect (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Suspended: A Cryogenic Nightmare (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Trinity (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.2) Witness, The (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Zork I: The Great Underground Empire (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Zork II: The Wizard of Frobozz (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Zork III: The Dungeon Master (1986)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Halley Project (Mindscape)(KS1.0) Racter (Mindscape)(KS1.1) Mindwalker (Commodore)(KS1.1)(WB) Ogre (Origin)(KS1.0) Video Vegas (Baudville)(KS1.1) Winnie The Pooh In The Hundred Acre Wood (Sierra)(KS1.1) 1987 - 9 --------- Bureaucracy (1987)(Infocom)(KS1.2) Hollywood Hijinx (1987)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Lurking Horror, The (1987)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Nord and Bert Couldn't Make Head or Tail of It (1987)(Infocom)(KS1.2) Plundered Hearts (1987)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Stationfall (1987)(Infocom)(KS1.0) Diablo (1987)(Robtek)(KS1.1)(WB) Flip-Flop (1987)(Kingsoft)(KS1.2) Kursk Campaign - Operation Zitadelle (1987)(Simulations Canada)(KS1.1) 1988 - 2 --------- Sherlock: The Riddle of the Crown Jewels (1988)(Infocom)(KS1.2) Sargon III (Hayden Software)(KS1.2)(WB) 1989 - 1 --------- Bridge Player 2150 Galactica (Oxford Softworks)(KS1.2) The only two i couldn't get working personally were both Mindscape games - Racter and Halley Project, but both are listed with 256k stickers on the game boxes, so i must be doing something wrong with these! Homebrew/PD/SW - 2 -------------------------- Dragon Slayer (Hitchhikr)(2023)(KS1.1) Missile Command/Defence (Merrison)(1986)(KS1.1) Last edited by Amigajay; 28 January 2024 at 11:51. |

The early Mindscape games like Halley Project, Shadowgate and Racter are 256.
Probably also very early games such as Tass Times in Tonetown and Hex. The problem identifying them is that prior to the A2000/A500, some games were listed as compatible with "Amiga", intending to mean a base Amiga launch system. I also seem to remember some early games having this kind of generic "Amiga" packaging but inheriting a "requires 512K sticker" as the developer realized that they need the extra RAM. Side note: If I remember right Alien Fires has 256k printed on the packaging, but had a 512K sticker over it before getting a packaging reprint. |

Monkey Business states that it requires 512k on the box.

There are a lot of games that you couldn't play today because they're so basic, but the historical fact & the list is interesting. Those were really 8 => 16 bit transition games.
What's also funny is that a lot of those games use the system more than more recent games (graphics library, audio.device, etc...) so porting them to AROS or Draco would require less effort Some could point out that we are retarded just by not using a Windows PC. |

Actually, I really like some of those games.
Not counting the text adventures (which I enjoy), Mindwalker is great and I always liked Hacker. ;-) And I agree. I LOVED the fact that Mindwalker multitasked. It was one of my early go to demos. Show people my Workbench, editor, whatever.. Then flip over to Mindwalker running!! ;-) |

Used to play One-on-One all the time on my 1000. Never knew I could pull the front RAM expansion and still play it.

some members talk about historical reasons ?
for historical reasons those games should be deleted/destroyed so that in the future they will not laugh about how retarded some programmers were those games= total crap, were written for comercial purposes to to fill the niche of a new computer, they lacked quality, inventiveness, etc The C64 games in those years were far superior The game mindwalker is one of the most interesting crazy thing it would seem that the programmers when they made that game were taking LSD pills or hallucinogenic mushrooms, then put in the game the things they saw, noboy understand nothing about such game, is a mystery |

Most Amiga owners from the 80s/90s will be in their 30s, 40s or 50s by now, with the exception of one guy who appears to still be 12...

@Mrz: Ok, we got your opinion on the matter.
Now, if you don't have games to add to Amigajay's list, you should refrain from posting in this thread. @others: don't let the thread be derailed. Although aggressively expressed, Mrz's opinion can be understood (at least the 2nd part of post #15). So, back on topic please. |

Some other games are so small that they should run too:
- Nebulus/Tower Toppler - Chubby Gristle |

<Heads to Hall of Light to search...> That is a REAL GAME!!! ;-) I'd never heard of it.... Screenshot gives me a real "Spectrum" vibe, although I've never owned a Speccy. Something about it tho reminds me of the Spectrum games I've seen online tho.. I'm going to have to try that one.. Thanx |
