Amiga 1200 + Samsung SyncMaster 740B
So I got my new (used) Samsung SyncMaster 740B and used this gizmo to connect my A1200 to the monitor. I turned both on and got a message that it doesn't like the resolution. I obtained a manual which tells me to connect the DVI cable to it, but I don't think need it.
When I brought the RGB connector online, the seller uploaded photo of Workbench on a similar SyncMaster (last picture) so it should work. Do I have to set Workbench to PAL: High Res before I connect the SyncMaster? |

That last photo is of a CRT monitor, a totally different beast to your LCD monitor. The adaptor you have doesn't change the frequency of the video output, it just lets you physically connect a VGA connector to the Amiga's RGB port. The monitor needs to support 15KHz modes or it just won't work.
You can set the A1200 to use a VGA screenmode that your monitor will probably show by selecting a screenmode like DblPAL, DblNTSC, Productivity, Euro72 etc., but that'll only work for system-friendly software. Most games will just use the native 15KHz modes. |

Also, one of the videos Dan Wood posted would give me an idea how to do this, but it looks like I need to buy something called an Indivision AGA mk 2. |

Yeah, it's a little tricky. You could always use the composite out with a normal TV to set up the mode, but if you want to use the native modes on that monitor (such as games will use) you'll need a scandoubler. These devices double the frequency of the Amiga's output, making them compatible with VGA monitors. The Indivision products are essentially scandoublers with added functionality that allows extra screenmodes. There are more basic scandoublers available but they're still a little expensive.

I have both Indivision ECS for A500 and A600 and AGA MK2 for A1200. But the best investment I did was 2x BenQ BL 702A 17 inch LED monitors using RGB to VGA. When pixel and phase are finetuned nothing can beat these monitors. Perfect scrolling and picture quality. Scandoublers will let you use laced resolutions with no flickering but if you use the Amiga mostly for gaming (who doesnt?) then the above mentioned screens are just perfect. Using real CRTs on 50Hz is not good for your eyes.
