Possible to use HxC in external drive?

Just wondering if it'll work in an external drive, as i want to keep df0 but have all the benefits of the HxC to hand when I need it.

also means I can put the LCD on the floppy case without modding the amiga case.

would this work?

I dont think it is a problem. Just set the jumper to DF1:.

Just like an unmodified Amiga external drive, it should work as either DF1:, DF2: or DF3: depending on its position in the drive chain.

However, I doubt whether it would be possible to switch it between, say, DF1: and DF2: without adding an appropriate switching circuit to the interface.

Are you saying that the built in capability of acting as two drives wont work? or that it simply wont work as two drives if it's not DF0 and Df1.

apologies in advance if i've misunderstood, but i skimmed the manual and it mentioned something about emulating both df0 and df1 at once?

No, I didn't realize that the HxC emulator could emulate DF0: as well as DF1: - let alone at the same time!

Ah well, I presume that it must be possible then - perhaps with a slight modification to the circuit or even a simplification - since I would have thought that it's more complicated to emulate DF0: and DF1: together than DF1: and DF2: because of dissimilarities in the interface.

hmmm, I dont recall having problems with that back in the day. when my A600 df0 died I used my df1 for quite a few weeks until i could afford a replacement. Of the games that wouldn't boot, simply holding left and right mouse buttons and telling it to boot from df1 did the trick. I have a vague memory of actually making the external drive df0 through some software at some point too. i could be mistaken/dreaming/imagining that though, it has been 20 years!

i'd rather not have to cut up another 1200 shell just for the lcd... would love to throw some ideas on how i could avoid that around

There is info about you can cut one of he traces and use df1 as df0 but most games will require df0

If u are using it on an a500, The easy and best way is getting a boot switch, try looking at amibay, i bought a couple some weeks ago.
