A 600 ide interface

Hello,
What are my chances of installing a slimline cdrom on the bare a600 ide interface ? (I mean no buffered ide adaptor). I tried to connect a 3.5 hd and slim cdrom today to my a600 with no luck. I have kickstart 37.350 & wb2.1. The hd won't boot when cdrom is connected. (fitting a 3.1 a500 kickstart temporarily didn't solve the problem either)

Your HD is probably incompatible with the CD-ROM.. I assume you've checkced master/slave settings on both?

Well, the hd is not jumpered, it won't boot if I jumper it slave or master. The slimline ide adaptor also doesn't have jumpers for master/slave select it's cable select by default. So this is the problem ?

Try booting the machine with the cd drive only connected. Make a boot disk with sysinfo or scsiquery or something that shows you the ids of connected storage devices.

If the cd drive is cable select and your ide cable is not cable select compatible, it will probably appear as master or unit 0.

Thus you must either force the cd drive to be slave, or use a cable select cable.. All 80 wire cables are cable select compatible.

@jope

I thought that for Cable Select to work ALL devices need to be set as such.

I was under the impression that JAE adapted SFF roms are CS by default, however IIRC 2.5" hard disks are MA (master) by default, there should be a guide on the hard disk on how to select MA SL and CS.

Many moons ago I had issues with a hard disk and a CDROM, it was only when I moved them BOTH over to CS that both devices could be used (and seen by the system), interestingly this is running from a 40pin IDC.

Ok, I put in my 2.5 hd with a 2.5 2.5 3.5 cable and it boots now.
However cdrom is not seen on the scsi chain . I think I have to force the bastard to slave somehow. Now checking hacks for slimline ide adapters. I found a hack to force master probably someone did slave as well ...

What device (scsi.device?) are you using when scanning for IDs?
The old scsi.device can't see ATAPI drives (CD-Roms beeing just that). Try to patch the device or use a different one alltogether (aminet has a nice selection) and see what happens.

cut wire #28 on the IDE cable to the 3.5" connection and that'll force it to slave mode.

Can anyone confirm that the above statement (cutting wire 28) is correct before I butcher one of my cables.
Thankyou

It's true, but there's no need to butcher the cable irreversibly. Just open up the connector from the end of the cable, peel back wire #28 and close the connector again.
