The CD versions of Alone in the Dark games are just great, especially the first one. Reading the books in the library is hilarious as Carnby loses his sanity

Picked the whole Wing Commander series lately: The Kilrathi Saga, WC4 and Prophecy Gold. I loved WC1 on Amiga so much (despite its numerous technical shortcomings) and I was mad about not seeing any sequels on it... a 030+ AGA machine would have handled WC3 and 4 easily, let alone WC2...

allright, a good DOS box is like that... and I mean a DOS box, not an old pc with a voodoo to run 3d games...
- p200mmx or 166mmx (anything from 486/100 to pentiumII/400 is good, but if you manage to keep under 200Mhz then some old progs won't need speed patches to run... not that this is a big deal, a small TSR can fix it, but for DOS anything above a 200mmx is not really needed... also a pentium1 is a good idead too, let's you run windows98/me so you can easily make a network , use usb devices to transfer stuff to the dosbox and finally use the FAT32 filesystem that does not have the 2GB per partition limitation) - 64 MB ram (if u can find one, lol I use an 128MB SDRAM module...) - A PCI gfx card , with 4MB or 8MB ram , the s3 virge ones where good and common so they are supported a lot. then you need to get also the free UNIVBE 6.7 package to add better VESA screenmodes support... on another thread there where reccomendation for Matrox cards, but I never had any of them... - A soundblaster16 ISA sound card that has the wavetable connector so you can add an extra wavetable daughterboard. there are better sound cards than soundblaster16 for sure, but since we need high compatibillity without messing with drivers/settings, this is an excellent choise. as for the wavetable daughterboard: excellent choises are the Yamaha DB50XG or DB60XG or the Roland SDB-55. ofcourse the ultimate midi+wave combo would be: sb16+db?0XG and an extra isa midi card like the Roland LAPC-I or the SCC-I ... that gives 100% sound satisfaction - 20GB HD ... it is amazing how fast u can fill it with old games I have this dos-box: p166mmx/128MB Ram/20GB HD/Diamond Stealth3D Pro (s3 virge dx) 4MB/SB16+DB60XG/Roland SCC-I and a USB2 pci card to transfer files easily... installed is win98se with the unofficial SP2... |

S3 chipped cards are decent at SVGA but for older plain VGA games they are not so hot.
Also if you do get into the older DOS games the Gravis Ultrasound is directly supported and sounds decent (also the DEMO scene used it alot). |

In my experience because I had s3 cards back then I never had any probs. We are talking pci here, for isa/vlb the best ones are the Cirrus Logic based cards.
Also I don't think that the Gravis Ultrasound is a good option these days. It is a great card, but all I heared was some compatibillity issues... it may require some effort to get it working, patches to be found, etc... In terms of ease and compatibillity I don't think it is a great option... all these info was easily found in the 90's , but now things have changed... |

I am talking about early games that had native Ultrasound support built in(back before the soundblaster 16). Compatability issues were from the SB emulkation use on the ultrasound, which I do not worry about because I have a Soundblaster Pro 2.0 in the same machine.

My 386/40 has A gravis Ultrasound Max with 1MB of RAM (came with 512K) and a Soundblaster Pro 2.0 for early DOS games (Tseng Et4000AX for video) My P200MMx has a Gravis Ultrasound PnP (8MB of RAM) along with a Soundblaster 16 + DBX50 Yamaha waveblaster add-on (Nvidia RIVA 4MB PCI for video). I also have a Orchid Righteous 3d Voodoo 1 for when I boot into Windows 95 for early 3dfx Games using removable HD carriers. |

By early 3dFX I mean games like the original tomb raider that you needed to download a glide addon to play in 640x480 or the special Mechwarrior 3dfx edition. For later games I use a p2-400 with a TNT AGP video card along with a Voodoo 2 SLI setup.

I wish I had my v2 SLI setup still....
I got now a single v2 board by diamond, but it has only 8MB?!? my creative labs ones where 12MB.... maybe I need to search ebay for a SLI setup, or at least the vga cable to connect v2<->vga... |

This thread has reminded me that my Voodoo 5 5500 is still sat in its box under my desk!
Definitely time to build myself a nice retro PC. |

Anything to PII/III 450 with 128MB memory should work well with Win98SE and DOS shortcut. Long time ago on Abandonia I created sort of tutorial on how to build custom DOS shortcut for PC, and how to use it. Nice thing is that once you enter the shortcut, your computer turns into DOS macnine, but a bit different from Shut Down into DOS mode, because if you rebote computer, you're still in DOS (windows does not start until you type EXIT ) I tested many DOS game with this configuration and did not have a single game that did not work. (all with sounds and music) |

It’s probably been said before but anyone with a PC fast enough to run UAE really should try DosBox with MT32Emu and a good frontend like D-fend.
With some tweaks I even get the right aspect with my 5:4 TFT screen that sucks in real dos. |
