The SNES was supposed to be backwards compatible with the NES but they messed it up, leaving the SNES with an awful hybrid 8/16-bit processor.

Can't believe that nobody has mentioned that the GBA plays Gameboy games (both original and Color). They look stupid sticking out of the back of the GBA though.
And I suppose you could mention that the GB Color plays original GB games. |

I assumed being able to use the original game media on a newer system with no modifications was the intent of this thread. |

Might not be a console but weren't the MSX2 compatible with MSX1 software?
And I think I saw a thingie you could buy for the GC to allow you to play SNES games. |

Commodore 128 could run C64 software
I'm unsure about the topic though, besides the lame emulation mentions, I see hardwareadapters mentioned. do they count? PSX needs no addon to play PS1 games. So TRUE backwards-compatible machines I know are: *Atari 7800 - A2600 compatibility *Gameboy Color - Gameboy Classic compatibility *Gameboy Advance - GB Classic and Color compatibility *Wonderswan Color/Swancrystal - Wonderswan B/W compatibility *Nec Supergrafx - PC Engine compatibility And computers: *Commodore 128 - C64 compatibility *MSX Turbo R - MSX1/2 compatibility *MSX2 - MSX1 compatibility *A1200/4000 - A500 compatibility (these last two are almost identical specs, should they be considered? differences between MSX1 and 2 are similar to differences between an A500 and an A600) |

So we're all over the board here, if we wanted to be strict about this topic then we'd have to delete any mention of a Micro and Handheld's as it really should be CONSOLE's only
OK, so this means EMU's are out too |

why exclude handheld consoles?
I think Anti talks about any games console that had built-in backwards compatibility. |

I guess cause I never considered Handhelds to be Consoles. To *me* a console is a gaming device that has to connect up to a display, either monitor or TV and handheld's already have a built-in display
But I see your point perhasps this is what is really meant by backwards compatibility |
