SimpleMail

So I'm not having much joy getting YAM to recover my email, so i thought I'd give SimpleMail a shot. Only i'm having very little joy, when I bring up the config page, I can't get the accounts page to pop up.

I read here on the forum that I might have some joy changing the Nlist font in MUI, only when i bring MUI up, the font is really messed up.

Can anyone tell me whats going on?

If you can get a hold of XHelvetica, set it, size 11, as the "Normal" font on the Windows panel in MUI settings. If you have TrueType fonts set up on your system, you might want to try one of them as well, but I've not had much luck with that myself. XHelvetica/11 has the best results.

On the mui page showing in yr message, klick on the little triangle where it says ‘settings’. It should bring up a drop down menu with 3-4 preset settings. Select Stuntzi or one of the others and try which one reads better.

Is XHelvetica a TTF ?

I'll not sure how I set up true types in the Amiga. It's been a few years and several beers ago.

What machine are you running MUI5 on? It's not ideal for 68k setups without graphics cards - MUI 3.8 might be more suitable. It also comes with more sensible defaults. From the screenshot it looks like the fonts chosen are bitmap fonts that are being scaled to an awkward size. Bitmap fonts have certain "native" sizes, and scaling them to other sizes doesn't always give you great results, particularly when they're small sizes like this.

XEN, XHelvetica and so on were included with the MagicWB pack IIRC, so maybe give that a go. But you don't need to even go that far - Workbench includes helvetica.font as standard and is perfectly legible when selected at a native size.

Simple mail requires the latest version of mui as far as I understand, so I updated to the latest version.

I’m running this on an emulated A1200, prior to copying the SD image over to my actual A1200. I wanted to test things first, kinda glad I did.

Okay, well version 0.45 lists MUI 3.8 as a requirement. Having the latest custom classes (e.g. NList and co.) would be a good idea, and might be what you're referring to. But I've yet to come across a 68k application that requires MUI 5. You might well find that it struggles with speed on your actual A1200, since it's optimised for use on graphics cards rather than the native chipset.

But aside from that, scaling fonts like that will be ugly unless you're careful about your choice of font. It looks like it's set to use a really small size, but if the font selected doesn't have a native bitmap version at that size, it'll be difficult to read.

Actually mui 4 & 5 on real 68k amigas even with 030 accelerators run slow... mui 3.8 runs better and 3.9 is buggy. Not that updating to 5 is bad especially if you don’t mind the longer loading times.

As far as fonts appearing on mui and other apps using mui, did you try switching the presets I wrote to you before? That is the simplest way of changing and using different settings without you messing things up. Just swap between the presets and see which ones read best.. Stuntzi option usually gives good results. As Daedalus said if changing by hand fonts and other options in mui, will probably won’t have a good result.

So i downgraded to MUI 3.9 and all the text is working, Huzzar! However SimpleMail while looking better, still crashes when i go "/Configuration/Accounts"

The moment I click the accounts option, the config window closes, so it is impossible to setup an email account.

If 3.9 is not buggy for you then ok. Go with this. Simplemail requires some more components in order to run. 1) Betterstring 2) NList 3) TextEditor 4) TheBar and 5) popplaceholder. Get the latest versions of the all the above classes and try again. It would be good idea to check the read me file as well for any other requirements. It also needs AMISSL.

I downloaded all the components listed In the “read me” prior to trying to run SimpleMail, but left out the optional ones as they were after all optional. I’ll install the optional components and report back.

I’m using an ACA1230 with 64mb, doesn’t feel THAT slow, unless I compare it to my Blizzard 1260.

I didn’t say that MUI 3.9 is slow, I said is buggy. MUI 4 or 5 is slow. MUI 3.8 is the one recommended for 68k machines. Ok then try those MUI classes I wrote and tell us the outcome
