Zip Drive & WinUAE?

Hi all,

I have searched but couldn't really find any relevant information to what i would like to do.

I would like to be able to use my ide zip drive in my pc through winuae.

Is anybody else managing to do this okay?

I have searched on the net, but at the moment i am unable to format the zip disk. I have winuae log telling me that it has found my zip 100 drive on uaescsi.device unit 4, i have installed Z100 and im using the ZPC DosDriver that i used to use on my Amiga. I have edited the icon tooltypes to read uaescsi.device and unit 4.

However, when i go into my workbench with winuae it doesnt acknowledge that the zip disk has been inserted until i reset winuae, and then i am unable to format the disk, even though the zip disk is formatted in FAT and ZPC Dos Driver can use that on a real amiga.

Thanks for any help

It should work. Enable logging in misc-panel and run WinUAE with -scsilog command line parameter ("winuae.exe -scsilog"), boot to WB normally, try to mount the device, exit WinUAE and attach or email the log file (winuaebootlog.txt and winuaelog.txt), thanks

Hi Toni,

Ran my WinUAE with the following -noaspicfiltering -scsilog. Couldn't find a seperate scsilog but the winuaelog is larger than normal with loads of scsi stuff in it.

Inserted my Zip Drive, and when i run Safe100 it recognises that the Zip Drive is in the Drive, i can eject it. But when i try and format the disk it says Disk is write protected and it isnt it is just formatted in FAT.

Should i try a different DosDriver? Which do you recommend?

Here are my logs

winuaebootlog.txt

winuaelog.txt

Thanks for the help.

Try SPTI or SPTI+SCSI SCAN settings in misc-panel. (next to uaescsi.device enable-checkbox) Nero ASPI may not support non-CDROM devices 100%.

With SPTI + SCAN i get:-

SPTI: unit 4 '\\?\usb#vid_04b8&pid_011d#6&12ed234a&0&1#{6bdd1fc6-810f-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f}' added

I think the problem is that uaescsi.device does not (yet) support any trackdisk-device type writing commands (CMD_WRITE and CMD_FORMAT) but simply returns write protected error. I'll implement this in future.. (uaescsi.device was originally made for CD-drives only and CD-R writing does not need it because writing uses SCSI write-commands)

Anyway, ZIP drive writing should work if there is "use SCSI Direct" or similar option somewhere in mountlist settings.

SPTI error means your device driver does not accept SCSI direct for some reason (another unexplained Windows mystery.. ASPI, at least in theory, uses exact same interface and it does work..)

Thanks for the info, its great that you are going to implement this in future. I know from looking around on the internet that quite a few people would like to be able to use there ide zip drives through WinUAE.

Look forware to a newer version. Thanks again.

I have a PC Zip drive and an Amiga with Zip drive. Is it possible to transfer files from PC to Amiga via a Zip disk, and how? It would mean a lot to me if it works.

The Amiga can read PC formatted ZIP disks with FAT95.

CrossDOS, MessyDOS (MSH), XFS all do the same. But FAT95 is probably the most advanced one. It supports long file names, FAT32 partitions, PC partition tables and even has chkdisk functionality.

P.S. there are no links in this post

Nice.

I wish I'd have read more in to FAT95 at the time, didn't realise it could do long filenames.
