hello novacoder,
could it be possible to use ham modes ? Like this port of heretic did : http://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/Heretic It worked well on my amiga 400 and still works well with winuae. You could even make a ecs version in ham 6 perhaps these new accelerators bords are enough powerfull to display ham in 320x200 ?? |

Sorry to dig up an old thread; thought it would be cool to try "Day of the Tentacle" via WinUAE using AGA
Very quickly skimmed through this thread, so I need: a) To install / use one of these? b) Find the DOTT CD-ROM files? c) Anything else? |

Spent quite a few hours yesterday testing these files from the EAB File Server:
a) /Commodore_Amiga/Game/Archive/DOTT/dottAGA.zip b) /Commodore_Amiga/Game/Archive/DOTT/dottAGA2.zip c) /Commodore_Amiga/Game/Archive/DOTT/dottAGA_sound_addon.zip d) /~Uploads/DamienD/NON-TOSEC [20-02-2016]/DottAGA.zip e) /~Uploads/DamienD/NON-TOSEC [20-02-2016]/DottAGA_Sound_Addon.zip f) /~Uploads/DamienD/NON-TOSEC [20-02-2016]/Dott_AGA.zip g) /TheZone/files/dottAGA_novacoder [Day of the Tentacle AGA, WB-friendly version of Novacoder.].zip Most of them would crash for me when loading (and yes I read the install.txt / readme + added in the libs etc.) Also tried these ScummVM files from Aminet: ... ScummVM_AGA.lha 0.38 ... ScummVM_AGA_030.lha 1.5.0.004 ... ScummVM_AGA_040.lha 1.5.0.004 ... ScummVM_AGA_060.lha 1.5.0.007 Definitely the best archive for me was g). It also has music, speech and subtitles included / enabled I had to do the following for anyone else that wants to try:
... CPU = 68030 ... CPU Emulation Speed = Fastest possible ... FPU = None ... Chipset = AGA ... Cycle-exact (full) = unticked ... Chip = 2 MB ... Z2 Fast = 8 MB Anyway, would be interested to know what files others use and the performance experienced |

Well, I have never got DOTT to work on my Amiga (well not that was playable), until I used g) dottAGA_Novacoder version as mentioned above. It is playable on a 030@25mhz. There is some slowdown in the graphic intensive cut scenes but the point and click game is definitely playable.

I don't think the icon in NovaCoder's package looked that great:
...so replaced it with an icon from a package that liviux76 gave me for testing: All required "Tool Types" have also been added to this new icon: Attached for anyone that wants it; just replace your "DOTT AGA.info" file with the one in this archive |

Music + Sfx works with this
But: The Play Screen is less than a Quarter of the Workbench area. And if I load a SaveFile the Sfx are Killed |

...even if I use "720 x 576" & "Double line mode" (so the complete WB screen is visible), DOTT still fills a lot of the screen: Standard WB 3.1 or Classic WB Lite install. Game started via Workbench / icon... The "DOTT AGA.readme" file in the package does say this: Code:
RESOLUTION: ----------- DOTT is a VGA game, therefore it runs best in VGA mode. Copy the monitor drivers 'Multiscan' and 'VGA Only' to your Devs/Monitors drawer and reboot (PAL/NTSC are also supported). I haven't noticed this as yet... Last edited by DamienD; 02 January 2017 at 01:05. |

I was using Amiga In A Box with a Workbench 3.1
@ 1024 x 768 --- 040 with 128 Meg Fast. The file you gave gives Full Screen with better sound than the Aminet version (but not as good as the Quarter screen). Still kills the Speech (not SFX) if I load the supplied Save. Perhaps that save was made San Vox ? |

Very cool to see people still playing with my original AGA DOTT port but I'd recommend using ScummVM instead as the old ports were buggy.

...I can't get any of the ScummVM files to run anywhere near as good via WinUAE, see this post. Is this the latest version you did? Last edited by DamienD; 02 January 2017 at 12:15. |

Speech isn't throughout the whole game; I believe it's only really cutscenes and not when you are walking around / picking up items etc... At least that's how I remember it when playing on the PC many moons ago. |

Hi Novacoder
Unfortunately scummvm aga is just to slow on my 030 compared to the release of dott above. I do have the original dos dott talkie cd. If I replace the files packaged with your release will get a full talkie game ? |

If you can tell us which scummvm-version (with the correct settings, extra tools etc) should work better then your port, that sounds interesting. |

Started the game and created a new save immediately. Opened the grandfather clock; heard sound FX and speech in the next cut scenes. Pressed <F5>, loaded my saved game and repeated the above. Sound FX / speech / music all still working |

Performance Considerations for ScummVM AGA/RTG: 1) You should always patch exec.library's CopyMem() and CopyMemQuick() routines for faster processor specific versions. 2) Try reducing the audio playback frequency down to 8k if you're still having performance issues. 3) If you are using Paula, stick with the 'FAST' 8/14 bit modes for AHI (prefs) - a real 16 bit card *may* be faster with a 16 bit mode. 4) This interpreter really hits the hard drive so you'll need a fast transfer rate for the newer games (see below) 5) FFS is really really slow, use PFS3 instead 6) Loading your ROM into FASTRAM is a great idea (see below) 7) If you have a Blizzard you should really be using BlizKick to get most speed out of your Amiga, Apollo users should be using RemApollo. 8) Stick with v4.18 of AHI as the later versions are too slow 9) SCI games are very slow. This port uses AHI, it's really important that people use v4.18 of AHI with one of the 'FAST' modes set to be used in the AHI Prefs otherwise it will run slow on a real Amiga (this is true for any of my ports that use AHI). BTW Boing Bags 3/4 will upgrade your Amiga to v6.x of AHI so check what version you are actually running! Video setup guide -> [ Show youtube player ] Also, I think it runs faster using 3.1 ROMS (hard or soft kicked, it doesn't matter) Last edited by NovaCoder; 02 January 2017 at 23:32. |
