Toni, I'm testing SFS v1.273 (27/7/2007) in ClassicWB/Scalos on WinUAE v1.2. This version is the one currently supplied with the packs.
It's working fine as far as I can tell??? I've been copying data around, showing icons, deleting files and the tools don't report any errors. I know you're not interested in older versions, but if I can't get it to fail in this older WinUAE then it might be ok on a real Amiga. Am I looking at this too simplistically, will it eventually fail? Is it just a matter of time and asking for trouble running versions higher than 1.265 in older Scalos versions? After some extensive testing, I might even supply the old SFS version 0184, as that had 8GB support built in (newer ones only support 4GB without other patches) and it never caused me any issues. |

Does "FILESYS: EXALL non-existing ID x" (where x="random" number) appear in winuaelog.txt when icon problems happen?

I've just checked with winuae 1.4.5 and the icons appear fine if they are in RAM disk, or a FFS formated hdf but not from a directory.

This appears to be caused by another Scalos ExAll bug.. (I seems double ExAll bug was introduced in later Scalos versions and has nothing to do with this problem. Which also explains non-existing SFS compatibility problem. I guess this was fixed at the same time when the other bug was "implemented" )
Dos.lib ExAll Autodoc says (important part in bold): Entries: This field tells the calling application how many entries are in the buffer after calling ExAll. Note: make sure your code handles the 0 entries case, including 0 entries with continue non-zero. WinUAE's ExAll implementation can return zero entries if MatchFunc/MatchString is used. Unfortunately Scalos seems to think this also means end of directory.. I am not going to fix this, too complex.. (Does Scalos have some kind of "Do not use ExAll" flag?) |

...oh yeah and it also says in the Scalos FAQ:
Working with CD's causes crashs or Scalos doesn't work correctly. Most Filesystems doesn't support the ExAll function correctly. Disable "Use ExAll" in Scalos prefs. Or use a more recent SetPatch which fixes the ExAll. |

After all this messing around with the icons, a simple option in Scalos prefs fixes it and even outlines potential issues with certain filesystems in the FAQ! Going by what Toni said, it must depend where the file info is stored in the filesystem. If Scalos is told to stop reading a directory too soon, it doesn't display the full contents of the drawer. Probably wrong, but worth a try. I also need to know what the ExAll feature does in Scalos and what the repercussions of disabling it are. Absolutely no info is given on this setting in the 1.2D readme files. I'm guessing it has something to do with reading directories in a faster way. I'm actually glad in a way that the original "Bug" was from the newer beta Scalos releases and not the 1.2D stable release that I've been happily using for years. Bugs like that and strange performance issues on slower real Amiga's from newer releases are why I've stuck with good old 1.2D. Last edited by Bloodwych; 09 January 2008 at 13:56. |

I decided to "fix" this "bug" after all. WinUAE directory filesystem ExAll() is now bug and feature-compatible with FFS implementation
It is now "compatible" with both Scalos bugs.. Quote:

Thanks Toni - you're a true star!!!
WinUAE developing must be a frustrating process at times, especially when dealing with buggy software. Thank goodness you've been patient enough to stick by it all these years. |
