McDuck has just reported this is an issue with WinUAE beta versions:
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?p=384912 Are you using a newer WinUAE than the v1.2 provided with the UAE version? The reason I provide the older v1.2 is that I have thoroughly tested it for ClassicWB compatibility. Last edited by Bloodwych; 07 January 2008 at 11:38. |

KillerGorilla, sorry for hi-jacking your thread with the missing icons issue. If a mod wants to merge this with another thread then feel free.
McDuck, thanks for your input. I thought it may be WinUAE specific as I haven't changed any of the icon libs or Scalos files. Plus it works fine on my computer, but I'm using the older v1.2 (because I only like to use versions I've tested thoroughly myself for ClassicWB development). |

Phew, that's good to hear!
I don't like problems I can't reproduce! You might want to try the new ClassicWB packs I updated yesterday with built in WHDLoad launcher support. It automatically makes a sorted list of installed whdload games so you just have to double click its name in order to launch it. Funny thing is, using this launcher you won't see the icons! Ask if you need help on how to use this feature. |

I am 99.9% sure it is software conflict and not an emulation problem. Recent WinUAE versions allocate filesystem emulation buffers differently and this can break some buggy software.
Not the first time Amiga-side emulation code change have broken bad programs.. |

Well Scalos isn't exactly an official program and it definately has bugs - but it works on real Amiga's and this is the first time I've had a reported issue with WinUAE. Every version I've extensively tested has always worked great but as I said above I haven't tried the newer versions. If I helped a little in the beta testing of new versions perhaps the issue wouldn't have surfaced!
The packs in their default state run next-to-no patches other than Scalos and are quite "clean" compared to most systems - but obviously it's doing something different to standard Workbench that's conflicting under emulation. Last edited by Bloodwych; 07 January 2008 at 12:19. |

Bloodwych, the icons reappear when turning off scalos, maybe winuae don't handles scalos perfectly? |

Ah so it's a winuae problem!
I never use the beta versions as I once had a bad experience with them so that'll be why I've never seen it happen! |

Just to update people in this thread that had the Scalos/Icon issue, we've tracked it down to newer versions of WinUAE (Toni posts too):

Found it.. It is caused by Scalos bug in ACTION_EXAMINE_ALL
<snip from old private beta discussion> > Scales is buggy, it calls ExAll again even if previous call returned > ERROR_NO_MORE_ENTRIES. (this should not be done and returns error > ERROR_OBJECT_WRONG_TYPE) </snip> This also makes Scalos incompatible with SFS (FFS does return ERROR_NO_MORE_ENTRIES but calling ExAll() again is a bug and results in undefined behaviour so this won't be changed) ADD: And it is fixed in 41.6 (Bugfix: EXALL packet was issued once more after ERROR_NO_MORE_ENTRIES had been returned.) Thanks for the feedback Toni.
The problem is the latest Scalos releases are not very kind to low end classic Amiga's and caused me more problems than they fixed! At least the cause of the issue has been identified. Since these packs are aimed at real Amiga's, I don't know if I'll get around to changing them to a newer Scalos. I've ran the ClassicWB packs on my A1200 with SFS for years and not had any problems. I'll see what I can do for the next releases, but Scalos is definitely staying in the packs. The LITE obviously uses Workbench only. The new pack I'm working on will use OS3.9 and no Scalos. I just tested with 1.4.4 and 1.4.5 and indeed the icons are missing.
Looks like I'll be sticking with 1.4.3 from now on |
