Not sure that's really the reason why 2D aren't made anymore (and I would surely like 'new' 2D platform or shoot 'em ups ). I was quite impressed by early 'pseudo' 3D games on the PSX like Loaded and Crash Bandicoot as they added a bit over a plain 2D game with the presentation and gameplay elements. Still it's more about a good idea and gameplay, than just the way it's coded or the perspective its presented in

Games like this:

That's what I like to see: 2d gameplay with 'simple' and effective 3D graphics and modern additions like a multiplayer mode. The best kind of games IMO.

Lately I played a PC game called Trine. It's a side-scrolling Lost Vikings type puzzle platformer, but with modern 3D graphics and a physics engine. Lots of fun!

Some elements of Trine remind me of Amiga games. There are parts where you have to block regularly-timed fireballs with the warrior character's shield before quickly switching, like the [ Show youtube player ], and some of the trapped corridors remind me of the [ Show youtube player ].

It was already in my Steam wish list, but thanks for confirming the game is cool!
