Any Socket 3 or Socket for a 486 chip will do.

I had to re-work some boards to get mine

Well the cards arrived today. One worked the other was in a bit of a state. So i got to work soldered on a replacement cap tried it and no joy. Reseated the mach chips, still no joy. Had a brain wave and decided to swop mach chips with the working card, and to my surprise the busted card jumped into life. I thought , what the hell,and put the mach chips from the broken card in the what was the working card and that one worked too. i guess the connections must have been a little dirty, So lifting them out and putting them back in again a couple of times must of cleaned them, so now i have two working Apollo 1240 40 MHz cards, Cant wait to leave feedback to the eBay seller, he will be please he sold me a working card as faulty!

What would be a normal price for these cards then ? Did i get a bargin ? I have to say, these cards are quite fast. I just did some rendering in lightwave and it rocks. Much faster than the Blizzard 1230. both seem stable too. I did read about stability problems with them, also i have not installed any librarys yet or maped the kickstart to ram.

I've seen them go for between £80 and £117 on ebay lately.

One that was upgraded to 1260 went for £180 nt so long ago.

But thats ebay for you...highly inflated.

I've bought my Apollo1240/40 last year for US$200.00 (225 with P&P). And think that was a bargain!

Oh wow, 1240 for £175 they must have been mad or your marketing is great. So, who wants another one for £150 ???

Na, not selling! Im just waiting for the processor to arrive and i will be upgrading. And to get back on thread, during my net research i have found a couple of people that have installed the 060 without changing the Mach chips, or upgrading the eprom. They must have been lucky. Also found one guy that claims he had not installed the 3.3 V regulator either and it worked.

As for the regulator im thinking of making my own board with a modern linear or switching regulator. More likely to be Linear as there is no coil involved and i dont have any in stock. But thinking ahead, may make it an adjustable regulator, this will allow me to up the volts for overclocking a little as i read these 060's can suck the juice as the clock gets higher. As i have ordered one of the newer 060 (lets hope its real) i should manage to get a bit of speed out of this beast. But i think thats thinking ahead too far. next thing for me to order is a new hot air rework station, as i lent it to my brother a while ago and he says he gave it back! But i can't find it anywhere.

I found a seller who wants US$1.20 for the 27C128-15 (150ns, those 200ns are a no-go). And other seller who asks 38 bucks for an old revision 060.

I don't care for the newest mask (yea, yea, runs cooler, prone to overclock, etc). But a 56MHz 060 will be enough for me.

Better than this bugger bastard 040 I have.

All mobo fixes, new capacitors on board, good AT PSU (no noticeable ripple), etc... And it always crash the Amiga! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

My old overclocked (56MHz) & cooled (passive heatsinks and a vertical fan) Microbotics with 128Mb RAM don't have half the issues that 32Mb Apollo have. In truth, was hard to get a guru running it.

@rk,

I hear you, & understand you don't like your A1240, but can I say that I have not had 1 crash or guru since I installed mine, and yet I have been expecting it because of everyones comments. I have really thrashed it too.
I believe there is a big inconsistancy on the Apollos somewhere, some cards are perfect others dogs???. I know the A1200 Mobo Rev plays little part in this as I have used mine in a 1B, 1D2 & 1D4 and all was OK.

I hope I am not tempting fate by writing this

Well, Last Night i killed one of the 040 boards by running it with no fan. I'm pretty sure its overheated. Now i know what board will be getting the new processor!

This weekend i hope to have finished the regulator board. will post schematics and board layout if anyone is interested. In the end, after looking at the data sheets for the 68060, i decided to go for a fixed 3A rated low dropout regulator. I have seen some people say that the 2A regulator on the Apollo board may not be man enough for the higher clock rates, that's why its 3A. Only two caps are needed for the board plus the 16 pin connector, so it will be quite small. Decided to make the connector so that it will be soldered directly to the Apollo board. I may put a jumper on it so that it can be switched back to 5v. I'm not decided on this yet as i cant see why anyone would want to go back to the 040. It may be useful for testing but that's all.

Also i noticed that the two Thermal sensor pins on the 060 are made available on the power connector. I could incorporate some sort of thermal shutdown into the power board. That would save the processor from people like me that leave the fan off. Also would be useful for overclocking.

@TheCorfiot

My friend sorry for the late reply but I managed to find the fan today...

Check it out and if you think it suits you I'll send it tomorrow.

(It doesn't attach to the CPU, but next to the CPU where it gets the hot air from the side)
