Well, we have not heard from Jens yet, so don't rush out a buy one purely for CAPS, because it may not happen. Well, okay, you can't buy a Mk4 yet anyway... (that will be the only one supported)

When there is more news on this, we will let everyone know.

Cool, Just if at some point its found that its going to be acceptable to use with Re-Authoring IPF's back to disk, i will be *VERY* keen to get one.

I know many people out there that feel the same way. I guess we shall just have to wait and see.

So in theory would it be possible to dump CAPS images using something like a Catweazel - allowing people to dump a much wider range of media such as HD 3.5" and 5.25" disks? Would be cool for my C64 disks!

It's not confirmed yet about IPF images, but probably it works for .d64 images and the like.

Can't you dump originals to G64 with the XE1541 cable and a proper C64 disk drive?

@barkingboy

If we did do it, yes a dumping mode would be in there too. For 3.5" disks this might help a bit for people without Amiga's but with undumped games (though I don't think there is likely to be very many), and I guess other types of disks too.

You can dump HD 3.5" disks now btw, you just need an Amiga HD drive.

Quick OT question:

If I had an HD Amiga floppy drive and I stick a PC disk in it, would I be able to dump an image of the PC disk?

What exactly is this extra control that is missing in MK3 and we expect in MK4 ?

AFAIK all Catwezel cards can handle any format including protections. I don´t think I can afford a new one. Why can´t we use the MK3 ?

More flexible read- and write operations
In addition to working on whole tracks, which made all previous Catweasel models so flexible, tracks can now also be partially accessed very precisely. Should this become necessary for compatibility or speed reasons, the Catweasel MK4 is perfectly prepared.
I think this is what is interesting everyone.

Are you serious? Advertisement crap for me. He, he, more flexible, better, faster, ready for the new century.

Partial track access is the only interesting thing there.Could be nice for real time applications. WINUAE perhaps? But not for us. why we should care about this? We don´t need this for re-authoring or for dumping.

So I ask again. What exactly is missing in MK3 for re-authoring IPF back to disk? No bullshit answer please.

Not sure if these are important for writing Amiga copy protections but MK4 has at least following disk controller improvements:

- partial writes, wait for index sync, wait x clock cycles until writing starts.
- more exact timing, MK3 apparantly had some "random" error (length of single pulse written was not exactly the length asked but had some "random" value added)

So I take it the MK4 could more accurately write out long track schemes without said random marker then ?!?

If so then this would be one major reason for not using a MK3 then correct ?!?
