The reason I voted yes !

Firstly you started this thread on my birthday ...it would be a nice birthday present for my NEXT birthday !

I have run the 3.9 new icon version ..and while having some fun it uses too much on board memorey.
Particularly in most non PPC with graphics expanded with extra memorey machines, apps are slugish & whats the point of a new look that runs slower than earlier WB versions ?

The point in the expanded machine is when like me you have option through scan doubler & flicker fixer { with auto switching } to run both aga & higher graphics into a monitor you won't get icons disapearing into tiny dots

A thing that had me very frustrated when doing certain graphic modes with art & even games..

So please don't be put off by the nay sayers Bloodwych

Thanks for the support woody and others.

I hope it won't take that long to complete woody, a whole year, but who knows. I do tend to wander off for a few months at a time...

Bloodwych, will there be support for GFX card users? some option to disable the hacks that are not compatible or offer nothing when rtg is installed?

Graphics card users would have to add the required drivers themselves. Just look at this pack as an extension to a default install - it gets you off to a head start, but you'll need to finish up.

Nothing in the pack will be unfriendly to graphics cards except the copper background and FBlit, which will be either a user option during install or can be disabled from the settings menu before you install the graphics card drivers.

You may of course want to replace some library files or datatypes depending on your exact hardware and perhaps add visual prefs, specific patches etc. Since I avoid most patches in order to keep it classic and clean, you should have no issues finishing off the install for your exact hardware.

This will require 68020 AGA fastram and no FPU as it's default requirements, the same as the other ClassicWB packs, and will run well even on such a low end system.

Well, I'm going to be really busy the next few months leading up to xmas and not sure how much time I'll have to work on this.

As a result, I've decided to release the beta version of what I've done so far to regular known forum members via a pm request so as not to keep you waiting. New members who I'm not familiar with will have to wait for the official release as I'm not offering support for this version until I've had chance to fully test it and optimize it myself.

Anyone trying out this pack are welcome to post suggestions and comments in this thread and I'll take them up when I have some free time to work on it again.

The install script is non-existent at the moment, so the beta pack comes with the copper background as standard and you simply un-archive it directly on-top of a fresh OS3.9 install. I'm not sure how the official "Boing Bag" update packs affect things, so I suggest you install those first in order to avoid potential problems.

Of course you do Charlie, it's the peeps appearing from nowhere just to download I'm talking about, as I'm only offering limited help with the pack and don't want it spread all over the net before it's ready!

Just an update:

The conversion is going quite well. Now and then when I have a spare moment I chip away at the pack. Remember however this is about getting the ClassicWB environment running on OS3.9 files - not a super setup like AmiKit. The advantage is the base install should work on a reasonably common A1200 without anything bogging it down. You can add finishing touches yourself.

It will look and feel just like the ClassicWB ADVSP, but have all the advantages of OS3.9. Speed I can't comment on - I'm not sure if it'll feel as fast as the Workbench 3.0/3.1 packs, but I've never run OS3.9 on a real A1200 so I'm clueless.

The icons have all been converted, optimized and condensed using the great shell utility "CondenseIcon". Most of the software is over, many of the popup menu items are in place. It does eat a bit of FASTRAM, but that's a weakness of OS3.9 and its dockbar.

it does! i look forward to customize it... i will put picasso in it (if it's not there already) and throw in a nice cursor and colour scheme... i'm also very happy you throw away Scalos, it's too buggy or complicate to a quick use imho
