Also wondered that. Might be one of these Atari ST to Amiga conversion problems like with Midnight Resistance. Maybe a new job for Horace then?

Sorry to necro a really old thread.

I am having this issue saving with Shadowlands and Shadoworlds.

My problem is that I am using a Gotek, the game asks for an unformatted disk in DF0:

I have tried a blank .adf and also a disk erased with x-copy in df1: using an original external floppy drive.

the game insists that the .adf is not correct and will not use df1:

The manual states :
Quote:
[...]
NOTE: To save a game a blank unformatted disk is required to be inserted in any drive.
[...]
SAVE GAME
Click on the disk and then follow the instructions. You may format a blank disk from here if you do not have one already prepared.
[...]
WARNING:
Do not save or format onto your game disks, always have a fresh disk ready.

Yes i read that and thought great let's try a disk erased with x-copy ( which it informs me is then unformatted)??? in df1:

The game does not recognise this, the on-screen prompt states df0: only.

Is there a way to get an unformated blank.adf onto USB and use via gotek?

The game is probably using timing-dependent code or similar to access the floppy.

You could use the WHDLoad version instead.

Shadowlands fix

In the zone you will find the Shadowlands fix I did for the Amiga Format coverdisk back in.... 1996!!!

Execute the file "SHADOWLANDS-FIX" before you run the game. When the screen does weird colours, insert disk 1 and press left mouse button or fire button and maybe this will fix loading/saving problems.

For the life of me I can't remember what the hell I had to fix with the game (memory routines, disk routines?) but I also did Shadow Worlds as well but because the Bitmap Brothers kicked off about my Speedball 2 fix, Amiga Format opted to not publish any more

I've used Skid Row cracked version and the .IPFs.

Unfortunately I cannot create a save disk no matter what I do; not sure what the trick is here.

Glad its not just me then, I tried to erase a blank .adf using x-copy to see if it would recognize that and still had no joy.

Going to give them both a miss then, I've heard they were pretty good??

If you play via an emulator i.e. WinUAE then just use "Save States"

Basically they got arsey because I fixed Speedball 2 for AGA machines for free, whereas their solution to the problem was to re-release the Kixx budget version again and charge those that already bought it all over again.

I'm not sure if what I did affected Kixx sales but i'm guessing they must have done, but then again, I think its wholly unfair to try and charge people again that supported them in the first place, just because the copy protection was the only reason it didn't work!

Heya keithshaw3,

You'll be very happy to know that I've now got the following "Save Disks" created for both Shadowlands and Shadoworlds

I've tested saving / loading numerous times and all good, please see attached

Now, as for how I created these... it was a bit of hokery-pokery

Basically I did the following via WinUAE:
  • Downloaded Retroplay's WHDLoad "Shadowlands" installed package.
  • Loaded my "ClassicWB 3.1 Lite" .HDF and extracted the above.
  • Ran the game and proceeded to create a save.
  • Exited the game, noticed that a new "Disk.3" file had been created.
  • Quit emulation, loaded my "ClassicWB 3.1 Lite" .HDF again but selected the option to "Add PC drives at startup".
  • Moved the file "Disk.3" to my Windows partition and renamed as "Shadowlands [Save Disk].adf".
  • Loaded Shadowlands on .ADFs, tested saving on the inserted "Shadowlands [Save Disk].adf".
  • Quit the game, reloaded again and tested loading the saved game.
  • All working flawlessly.
I then repeated the above for Shadoworlds
Attached Files
File Type: zip Shadowlands [Save Disk].zip (41.2 KB, 83 views)
File Type: zip Shadoworlds [Save Disk].zip (22.1 KB, 70 views)
