"After The War" slave colour fixed, please test :)

Hi!

A lot of spanish games used the st palette values directly and as with Midnight Resistance that mean that you need to up the bright of your monitor to see something. I have added that feature to the Bored Seal "After The War" slave.

Wepl has advised me that i put the slave here, for the people can test and get feedback

For testing you only need to replace the slave with the attached and add to the icon the tooltype CUSTOM1=1 to get the bright colours (with 0, you will get the old boring st colours).

I hope that you like it and i'll try to fix other spanish games to make them more bearables

I'll test it when I get home.

I'm not sure if you noticed, I had a similar problem with Sorcery+

Thanks Whitesnake!!! I'll be glad of getting your feedback

Well, this is my first with WHDLoad, but Sorcery+ should be the same kind of ST-fix. I'll try to take a look during the next week

Thanks for the tests in the machine dlfrsilver and Bamiga2002!!!

Before to make the lha package, one question guys, should i always add a CUSTOM tooltype to select the bright palette or should i consider that using directly the ST palette is a bug and not giving option to see that "error" again?

Thanks, after the great feedback i have applied the Bamiga2002 advice and now the fixed palette is showed by default and if you want to see the boring dark st palette, then you will need to add the tooltype CUSTOM1=1 (or another value is not 0).

I have put in the zone the final version that i have just sent to Wepl.

Nice photos and yes, in real machine looks much better, these are the captures in emulator, before :

can you see if the problem is the same with Satan and astro marine corps ?

BTW there is something which could be great, Satan and After The War Amiga Lack the atari ST graphic introductions would be good to see if they can be implemented on amiga

Well, of course it could be possible, it would need disk images from the st originals in a not very strange format.

I don't remember well those extras, in "ATW" was a picture before to start the levels and in Satan a few pictures with music before the select level screen. Nothing world shaking...

Although i don't know if this is something appropriate for a WHDLoad slave.

Which version of lha do I need to extract it with ?

[edit]
lha 2.2 (freeware) also fails to extract it.

WinRAR extracted it, but I'm a bit iffy about extracting Amiga archives in a Windows environment.

Sorry Retroplay, i used the lha version included in my linux machine (LHa for UNIX V 1.14i). I have launched the amiga emu and built the archive there using lha 2.15 freeware and updated the file in The Zone

OK, dlfrsilver, but before i need to finish the first beta of my last CPC project, it's going to be showed in the Reset Party this weekend and those Amiga fixes were for relaxing of hard z80 code

Satan does not appear to have this problem. It looks pretty much identical on both the ST and Amiga. I've included the warrior screen shots from both. I also checked the Magician and they look the same. I admit the intro is nice on the ST, but its not worth the time to add it to the Amiga version.

Axel's Magic Hammer has a palette problem on the title screen but not in game.

At least it looks that way, upon checking; it is the same brightness as the Atari ST version.

Now you just need to fix "After The War" to use a two button joystick.

I'm not so sure about Axel's. Some of those values are above $777 already - eg $8a0, $88c, $00a. I just doubled the values in Photoshop and you end up with a picture that's far too bright.

However, if you want to tweak the palette manually and send me the RGB values I'll update the slave as long as I don't think it looks too ugly!

I think you are right, I just remembered the title screen looking dull compared to the colours used in the game.

I might play around with it in Paint Shop Pro sometime.

Oido cocina! Here you have , please test again, because i only played a few minutes and i hadn't time to use the ALT + M + 1 cheat

And if you have another great idea to add, tell now, for not annoying too much at Wepl with this slave

After a quick test on WinUAE,

I selected "2. Keys and Joystick" The game starts fine and you can move your character and JoyFire=1 works as punch, until you push JoyFire=2 which does make the kick work but it turns all the other functions into kick moves.

e.g. The joystick directions turn into kick etc.

I played Part One until Stage 1 Zone 2 and it was fine. I played Part Two briefly and that seemed fine too.

What Amiga hardware are you running?

Does it do this with the original .slave?

Dennis in case that after you reinstall your IPF, you get the same corrupted colours, send me your disk image, because you could have a version not preserved. I'm practically sure that the version sold in Spain, it's not the version preserved by softpress.

Lorna is similar to Axel's Magic Hammer, it's simply a bad palette choice, and the reason could be that the artist had the monitor set to low bright (as stupid that sounds, it's not so strange ).

A nice trick to discover fast if we have an "st palette bug" case, it's launch the WinUAE debugger (SHIFT + F12) and down left in the debugger window write e and press ENTER.

Then in the list of Amiga hardware registers that appears, look for the values for the colour registers ($180-$1BE, label as colour00-colour31). If the values of these registers use only numbers between 0-7, we have found one candidate to fix

Try with an adf of After (or Sorcery or Vixen or ...) and a game with nice Amiga palette and you will see as the difference jump to your eyes

ok i'm at my parents, i'll pick After the war with me

EDIT : i have dumped After the war original UK release, and also the DRO soft spanish version.

However, there is something which is strange, i have looked the source for the slave of this game, what is amazing is that both english and spanish (still in english however) is copy protected (wrong sector number and GAP).

Please check both copy protected disk images in the zone.

Sorry Dennis, i didn't get the notification of an update in this thread (although i have been lost between my birthday, the football and crossing the databases between cpc-power and wos).

I will take a look in the next days for supporting to both versions and adding the suggestions of Whitesnake for being able to control using only the joystick

Well dlfrsilver, i have added support for your versions to the slave. For making the disk images, you can use:
Code:
dic df0: fd=1 ld=1 size=901120
Both version are identical, except in the Dro version (ES) the protected track is the 158, and in the other (UK) the tracks are 158 and 159, fix that was easy, only change the value return in d0 in the routine checking for this track.

With respect to the original version supported by the slave, only is different the first load, and then is only a minimal change (+4 offset from the half of the program). The rest is the same, even include the check for the protected track code, but it looks that it was not checked or was a version already cracked or who knows, it could be a bug, dinamic never was distinguished by its high quality

I only tested a little, your feedback will be welcome

I think this is the definitive AW slave, i have added support to the two new versions preserved by dlfrsilver and make fully joystick controllable as Whitesnake suggested me for people using only a CD32.

I'm going to put in the Zone the disk images for all the versions already converted to use with this slave, you only need to rename to Disk.1 and put in the slave folder.

And in a few days, i will send to Wepl for making official.

I finally got to do some Amiga gaming this week and tried out your control additions to the slave and they work great.

Sorry for the delayed reply.
