The CPC was/is awesome. I had so much stuff for my various cps when I was younger. Rom boxes, mice , ram expandsions etc.
I used to know the screen address in hex off the top of my head and everything Ahhh I miss those days. I think I had more fun with my CPC than my miggies. Probably because I learnt to do more on CPC as was younger and more interested in computers then. Sorry for the thread hijack |

Huh ? nah really even if the game is not 50 fps, the graphics, sound, presentation, are overall above the c64 and amiga releases any day. The new CPC release is nearer to the coin-op than all the other versions. that was the point when they coded it.
C64 fanboism ? XD yes meh thinks |

It looks like a great game, but it sounds like if the fanboy is you. This is definitely NOT the conversion closest to the arcade (PC Engine is). It probably just is better than whatever shit they made for CPC back then. |

btw: Manfred Trenz wrote the C64 version in a few weeks, because he got not much time to do the conversion. Edit: And yes, the PC Engine and Sharp X68000 versions are the best ports, besides the 1:1 PSX port in the "R-Types" compilation, which is NOT an emulation. is there any chance you run .DSK files on CPC 464 with getting disk drive? I am aware that it can run tape games via mp3 player quite nice, but what about dsk.

They used the arcade graphics, converted them to CPC, and they got the spectrum code source from R-type (thanks Bob pape :P) and they heavily modified it. |

The size of the screen and the amount of shit that can happen on screen at once detracts you from a "true to arcade" conversion. The Amiga graphics were also converted from the arcade version and if looks are the judging bar, then the Amiga version looks BETTER than the CPC one.
Please explain how the lower one, specially running at less than 50FPS, looks better than the middle one. Anyway, I think this CPC port is superb, but one thing is that and one thing is fanboyism And the PC-Engine is NOT above the Amiga. |

Very easy to spot, i'm even amazed that while you've posted these screens you didn't see that the amiga release had its graphics not converted but redrawn by the factor 5 guy.
The CPC graphics were converted from the arcade ripped graphics. they just have not implemented 2 blocks at the bottom of the first level boss. Concerning the PC-engine, sorry but it displays 512 colors on screen, and it has hardware functions for playfield and sprites that the amiga is not touching A game like parasol stars displays 512 colors when the amiga release is 32. Mick West said that the amiga was in no way able to display such an amount of colors (sprites used 64 colors alone if i remember well XD) |

Yes, on that boss 2 circles/round holes are joined together only in Amiga version so it must be redrawn.

Of course the Amiga graphics were redrawn, not only for the amount of colors necessary, but because the resolution of the game does not match 1:1 that of the arcade machine, so this is done by hand to accomodate better the graphics. Unlike the CPC version. Last edited by Amiga1992; 09 March 2012 at 15:57. |

Oh XD ! The ZX version is way way behind the new CPC release. the gameplay by the way is excellent, i have betatested the game in order to have something better than the original playability. And i own the c64 version of r-type, so no. Even the r-type amiga release is not that good (i prefer R-type 2 which is better to my opinion).

Yeah, you also said Turrican II CPC was great game. R-Type II is a really bad Amiga conversion, jerky scrolling and heavy slowdowns. Arc Developments, they also ruined the Armalyte Amiga version. Ex Elite coder, they never had the skills do more than 8bit games. Factor 5 would have done a better job. You need the NTSC Tooltype in R-Type II, then the WHDLoad version is almost playable.

Yes turrican II is a great CPC game. No music but the speed is good And i'm not the only one to say that. (I own the game on tape on C64 LOL, 50 fps scroll but buy me another pair of eyes please XD).
About R-type 2, well, it's slow yes, but that's the point with this game. Yes Factor 5 should done better considering their latest titles like BC kid, or Turrican 2 indeed. |
