Lock MagicWB colours OS 3.5

Hi there, i've just installed OS 3.5 on my 1200 andi've noticed old magicWB icons display completelly wrong.

Colours are messy.

I've heard there are a lot of utils to lock the first 8 colours from the palette in order to make this icons work, and that i could find 'em on aminet.

However i'm not able to find any, could somebody recall some of these utils here so i can look for 'em?

Anticipated thanks.

set magicwb colours should be enabled to lock the magicwb pens. Also, I cant remember if RawWbInfo is installed with os35 or not (it is in os39) but you can right click the icon, open the icon info box and then remap the the icon to usethe magicwb pallet. am sure its on aminet if you dont have it.

There is no "Set MagicWB colors" in OS 3.5. This was introduced with OS 3.9.

RawWbInfo
There is nothing raw in this program. The name RAWBInfo is derived from ReAction WorkBench Info.

You could

- reduce the workbench screen to 8 colors only ;-)
- install the MagicWB-Daemon which comes with MagicWB if you are a registered user
- write you own daemon program (that's what I did many years ago because I was annoyed that MagicWB comes up with this THX-like intro every now and then)
- replace MagicWB icons by GlowIcons (that's what I would do nowadays).
- install another program which allows you to lock individual palette pens. FullPalette for example.
- upgrade to OS 3.9 (preferred).

You mean a 030 50mhz would be powerful enough to work with OS3.9 without having it slugging around? If you say it will be fine i'll jump directly to 3.9.

There is no speed difference between 3.5 and 3.9. OS 3.9 only has some more programs like video player, editor, amidock etc. If your Amiga runs 3.5 it will run 3.9 as well.

I use OS3.9 with a Blizzard 1230/IV+16 MB RAM and I believe it is better than OS3.5 in many small features.
However I remember, when I updated to OS3.9, how much this was slower Vs. the previous version. This happens mainly on updating the screen with icons. Removing the Amidock allowed to increase e bit the performances but not so much.
I always appreciate your helps and opinions, but sincerly this time my opinion is not like yours.

You need to download FullPalette from Aminet!!!!
It is the BEST Palette locking tool for AmigaOS!
It still isn't perfect, it can't lock the palette of Public screens, but NOTHING can!!!
ARGH

Use FullPalette and give your Workbench the palette it deserves, not the random crud it chooses for itself.

Thank you guys, i'll download FullPalette and give it a try.

However it seems i'll be forced to use OS3.5, i'm using the Dary's wonderful AmigaSYS4 package, but i'm not able to update it to OS3.9 properly. I get several errors after installing this update, plus it seems programs inside the WBStartup folder doesn't work anymore, and what's more, i feel it's really sluggish on my Bliz IV, so i guess i'll rather use OS3.5 at least for now. It's quite an improvement compared to 3.1, and fortunatelly it does work with the AmigaSYS pre-installed features. The only noticeable problems after this upgrade were the WBGauge, problem easilly fixed, and the MagicWB icons colour scheme, that i hope to fix with FullPalette.

Thank you so much, Thomas, Cammy and FC.Studio.

There shouldnt really be a major slowdown with os39, although Amidock will be the main culprit as its constantly refreshing its icons. Another possablity is the new exec installed with os39 which is mostly written in c instead of fast asm (for portability). This is an optional component but is enabled by default.

I expect there will be instalation issues installing over the top of an existing install with who knows what thrown into the mix by Amigasys. Maybe a new install of os39 + amigasys over the top of that will help you.

I've never had OS3.5 so I don't know what kind of icons come with it, but you have MagicWB icons anyway.

I think the icons that come with OS3.9 could amount to some sluggishness, they're more colourful than the 8-colour MagicWB icons. This should slow them down a bit and you probably want to slow things even further and run a deeper screen so they look good. Of course you probably want more than 8 colours anyway..

I'm using MagicWB-style icons on my OS3.9 out of personal preference.

This would be an argument for OS 3.5+ being slower than OS 3.1. But he is running OS 3.5 already and OS 3.5 comes with exactly the same icons as OS 3.9. So there should be no icon-related speed difference between 3.5 and 3.9.

Picture.dataype is the biggest slowdown culprit in later AmigaOS versions. I still find 3.1 to be the best OS to use.

I agree with Thomas on this one, 3.9 can run very nicely on even an 030 after a little 'fine tuning' (for example ditching the dock which has already been mentioned).

I'm running my 3.9 install on an 030 in 256 colours @ 640x480 and it's still plenty fast (with FullPalette locking my basic WB colour scheme). If I were to drop this down to 32 colours it would fly

OS 3.9 icons look the same as OS3.5 icons but they are not the same.
Indeed OS 3.5 can't read OS 3.9 icons (as 3.0/3.1 can't read 3.5/3.9).
Therefore OS 3.9 handles them differently, probably better, probably
heavy, surely slowly. With AmiDock removed in OS 3.9 the speed with a
Blizzard 1230/IV is acceptable but slower than OS3.5 with same colours
and resolution. Perhaps I miss some other configuration to speed up the system.
Obviously suggestions would be appreciated.
