Cool Fuzebox, an open source 8-bit game console

From "ladyada’s ranting" Blog Archive

Quote:
After many months of looking at NTSC waveforms on my scope (go video-sync trigger!) I have finished the Fuzebox, a fully open-source, DIY 8-bit game console (based on the Uzebox I posted about a while back). It is based almost completely on an ATmega644 with some video encoding help from the AD725.

Yay, so I can make my own games... hmm, wait...
Nice idea, but maybe a tad late to build a developer community for it. Anyway I wish them the best of luck

It's never too late to code a 8-bit NES-a-like game for your pleasure

So in other word a bit late and a bit stupid way to invest your time...

If you like to play 8 bit games you can choose emulation or either Wii for that matter, and play them.

Or you can make your own 'super-duper' 8-bit classics On the other hand I guess it ends with a handful clones of classic 8-bit games. Well like I said it's a nice idea for people that have really too much time on their hands

Yay, that's what the world needs

"Hey look, we got Linux running on that thingy!"
"Really? Awesome! Now what you'll do with it?"
"Well run Linux on it... Why do you ask?"
"Oh nevermind..."

Don't ask what can you do for Linux, just make it run on everything!

Surely this thing wastes most of it's CPU cycles creating NTSC Composite signals & Sigma Delta audio?

They should have considered a small CPLD "custom chip" as a partner.

None the less... amazing work.

@Alexh

I could of swore that there was an AD725 in there doing all that from an RGB source... the audio on the other hand is interesting...

There is an AD725? Ah.. a little better.

They still have to copy each pixel from RAM to the I/O pins and generate sync in software software.

A nice CPLD could have easily generated sync and contained a line buffer.
