GoldEd is overkill for a simple editor, I prefer CygnusEd (the os4 native version is horrendously fast but not publicly available before you all ask). Try annotate from onyxsoft, they released an update for it last week...

I tried EDword it seems to work fine but I always have to launch the program first to read a text.
Is there a way to read a text file by right clicking or opening a menu or whatever else ? |

You could:
1. Put Edword as the default tool in the text file's icon 2. Get a filemanager like ABCdir and define Edword as the executable to open text files or you could define a filemanager button to open selected files with Edword Example: In ABCdir, I had the filetype definition for Text file: Work:Edword/EdwordPro [f ([f is current selected file) Act on left-right click So left-right clicking on the text file would open the file with Edword. (double-clicking would open with MuchMore) |

If you want a lean, mean GoldED fighting machine, don't install the Cubic IDE features you don't need (GoldED is part of Cubic IDE). Installation is modular, all non-essential features can be left out. Not that it makes much sense beyond saving HD space. Stuff that's not used isn't loaded anyway and doesn't make it slower. Both, in my tests, are the fastest Amiga editors available on classic Amigas and UAE *) But of course I couldn't test all. Btw, GoldED/microgolded have a built-in benchmark: Load a large document, go to the top of it and enter the command TASK BENCH in the command dialog. This benchmark is useful to check how your UAE compares to your Pegasos or check the effect of settings in GoldED. The advantage of GoldED over microgolded is that it has filetypes and two important features that build on that: Syntax highlighting and plugs-ins. -- * Statement is based on time needed to page through large C source code and measure the time needed for that with a stop watch, with optimized settings, under same conditions. Same font (8 pixel wide), same window size, syntax highlighting on or off, without plug-ins. Optimized means "custom rendering" option for 8-pixel-wide fonts under "Global Settings" was on best setting. Under UAE, that's ON. Subjectively, some editors appear to be faster because they don't do flicker-free refresh and flicker creates the artifical impression of hectic speed. A stop watch shows the actual speed. GoldED loves source codes, their structure allows optimizations to kick in. |

still remember with revulsion the Unix sessions in Emacs at Uni... I still feel strongly about it. Strongly as in multi-colored vomit. |

CygnusED here too, but I never really took the time to get used to GoldEd, wich seems to be very feature rich.

AmigaWriter is more of a wordprocessor than a text editor, Rasputin. Programmers use text editors to create software, so they need a different sort of beast. They need, for example, color coding of different software functions in the programming languages they use.
(Because you've already mentioned AmigaWriter, Rasputin, it might not be too far offtopic to note here that I've started a new thread to ask how to get the program running on my machine.) I haven't written programs or even scripts for years. But there's one feature shared by vi and emacs that can be useful: You can find vi and emacs versions for probably every computer ever created. For all I know, in Japan, someone even has emacs running on an abacus. Anyone who programs on different hardware platforms will probably benefit from learning at least the basic keyboard commands for vi and emacs. Personally, I admire emacs a lot. It's possible to hook up .EL routines that will allow one to do ALL one's computing from within the editor. Even brew the coffee, if one's office has the right kind of coffee machine with the right kind of Ethernet connexion. It's argued that emacs has as much feature-bloat as a Microsoft product. But it's so configurable, and so good at what it does, that it's almost a force of nature. That said, I'll have to look at the text processors repeatedly recommended in this thread so far: CygnusEd, GoldEd, MicrogoldEd. |
