Top 10 Most Underrated Games on the Amiga - True Hidden Gems

Top 10 Most Underrated Games on the Amiga - True Hidden Gems

What is the most underrated game ever released on the Amiga?! Did it make my list? I decided I would rank the top 10 most underrated Amiga games that bought me so much joy in this fun video. I feel all these games are true hidden gems! Do you agree?

I like your list, especially Fiendish Freddy. Right now my top 10 underrated Amiga games would be in no particular order:

1 - Paramax
2 - Ruffian
3 - Jimmy's Fantastic Journey
4 - Dr. Cube's Magic Land
5 - Premiere
6 - Mega Typhoon
7 - Starush
8 - Ork
9 - Ultra Violent Worlds
10 - Tubular Worlds

It's a good list, but walker got boring fast.

A couple I still love:

ViroCop, RodLand & Fightin' Spirit.

Most of the games you mentioned aren't hidden gems, but just gems.

Pang, Cabal, Volley are well known Ocean arcade adaptations and very good. Walker got a lot of hype when it came out.

Body Blows / Galactic isn't exactly unknown either. But +1 for mentioning Magic Pockets the most underrated game from Bitmap Brothers, although excellent and deep.

Dune 1 maybe ? Overshadowed by Dune 2 but much better IMHO.
As for Amiga only games I'll go for Mr Nutz.
Or maybe Odyssey but I've havent played this game enough...

ATR maybe ? Reviews were far inferior to the reputation of this game among Amiga users.

Pang, Hunter, Cabal, Weird Dreams and Walker were very very big titles back in the day. Magic Pockets did nothing for me though, too slow and repetitive, by the end of level one I would give up in boredom!

Fiendish Freddy was an underrated classic, not sure how big Beach Volley was but it's an awesome game.

Nearly all beat em ups were poor on Amiga, Shadow Fighter was almost quite good and Mortal Kombat was decent enough.

Still, is just opinions at the end of the day!

My hidden gems would be Base Jumpers or Dragon Tiles. The former has gained some notoriety in recent years mind you.

Fightin'Spirit is also a good beat em up, although it came a bit too late.

Really tough to definie 'underrated'. Walker isn't well known in the wider world as it's an Amiga exclusive, but it's got over 200 votes on LemonAmiga, less than 70 games have more. It's averages 7.74 too, which is hardly terrible. Likewise Moonstone. Pang is even more adored by Amiga owners, maybe the fact that it wasn't called Pang elsewhere makes it less famous than you'd assume it'd be? Rod-Land seems more famous now than back in the day, if anything, certainly a favourite of mine.

Something like Magic Pockets is a more interesting case, as its average is relatively low considering its fame and success. I haven't played it much, but I've always perceived it as having similar issues to Gods (bad scrolling, unresponsive controls, no in-game music, relatively limited colours) but without the "it's an arcade adventure, not a kiddy platformer" mitigating circumstances. If I'm wrong, it may well be underrated.

As for my choices, Bob's Bad Day (7.6 and 52 votes on Lemon) is a great arcade puzzler. Spindizzy Worlds (7.63 from 62 votes) is a great sequel to a great 8-bit game. I don't think I'd ever heard of Giganoid (a respectably 7.57 but only 23 votes), but it's my favourite commercial Breakout clone. I never knew how great Hybris was either, though it's well known among Amiga owners who found the Amiga fairly early. A few later games seem to fit as well - Jimmy's Fantastic Journey feels good, Mega Typhoon is one I keep meaning to try, Mr. Nutz too, Tubular Worlds is tricky but feels quite impressive, Traps 'N' Treasures perhaps? Any number of PD games too.

I would add

- Extase

- Blob

Are PD games allowed? If yes:

- Space Taxi 3

- Age of Rock

For me, if we talk about "underrated in modern times" (and on mostly eab, hah) that would be any decent game which is not 2D action

There are bazillion threads here praising the likes of Hybris or Lionheart and how we really need an Outrun or SF2 port (so mostly "videogames"), but very little regarding "computer games", ie strategy/IF/simulation/RPG/early 3D and so on.

This article actually does a pretty good job mentioning a lot of them (at least when you look at #50-10) https://www.denofgeek.com/games/unde...e-amiga-games/

Here you can see the likes of Resolution 101, Midwinter, Shadowlands, Pacific Islands, Cybercon III, Thunderhawk, Corporation, Deuteros and a heap of other amazing games which are the real reason I love Amiga.

I agree 100 %

Midwinter 2 is one of my favorite games, I would love a port of the VGA version of it for our AGA machines.

Interesting point. Most of those games have high averages on LemonAmiga, but less votes than games in 'simpler' styles that don't feel as iconic - even if quite often it was the 'computer games' which outsold consolesque games. Lionheart reached #22 in Amiga Format's chart, A320 Airbus reached #2, yet which do most people remember? Lionheart has more votes on LemonAmiga than the first six games you listed put together, yet I dare say most of them outsold Lionheart. Even adored classics like Dune II, F1GP (my most played Amiga game ever), Settlers, Frontier and the Beholders have less votes than you might think. People who played 'computer games' were generally older and thus more affluent, and often those games needed the manuals much more - hence why people bought them rather than pirating them. Action games often sold less than you'd think, unless they were Christmas releases (especially big name licenses or cute / consoleseque), but seemingly had wider appeal than the (undoubtedly mostly brilliant) games you mention. Point and click adventures aside, these genres almost always have less votes than an action game with the same average, all other things (like release date and distribution quality) equal.
