To be clear, when ChatGPT does internet searches, it clearly does cite the sources. It just won't do that when the information it uses is already in its own knowledge base.

You're right, the situation here is in no way comparable to the dotcom bubble!

...'cause the dotcom bubble never reached a phase where the major players were begging for handouts to the tune of trillions in hopes of developing tech that would hypothetically allow their fundamental infrastructure to burn money at a slightly slower rate and admitting outright that their entire industry was long-term unsustainable just on an energy level without Unspecified Future Breakthroughs that were assuredly coming Real Soon Now

Right on, let's prove the "AI" is bust with a paywalled link about Altman's trip to UAE and something something climate change.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT and its ilk are already here and it's rather clear all they need is a bit of tweaking and further training to truly become what search engines set out to be in the first place, and not even mentioning real VPAs, DALL-E, and people losing their jobs across a vast array of fields.

Just sayin', I'm not gonna place any bets on a business whose #1 big cheese says they need $7 trillion just to keep it afloat hanging around for long

Of course feel free to determine what you believe is better for EAB (I will do that with my finances as well).
The problem is that bots (or LLMs) are not always using correct user-agents to announce themselve, so I can't block or ratelimit them.
The only way to stop bots would be to make EAB's completly private, and I won't do that because we are here to help people

Answers I share here to help others, not for some inhuman engine to generate incorrect spam. What you write is your Intellectual Property.

Perhaps there could be a Captcha or similar verification on threads (and the search boxes) for not logged in humans, except say 1% of the threads? That's still a lot of data, allowing search results to give a first page hit in search engines.

Your likeness is protected. Maybe also a similar human reveal button for images? Just in case someone shares a photo of them or others.

Thats certainly 1 issue with these AI engines, the other issue ofc is that when an AI scrapes info from something like a forum its probably also taking peoples responses to a multitude of topics to then train itself on human behaviour and interaction.

So these AI bots arent always there to produce "help" for others, its also very much about taking as much data as possible to train a better version of itself for free.

Same deal with AI generated pictures, they dont just magic artwork up out of nowhere, they need a massive collection of pictures/data to learn/adapt from and these things basically take anything and everything, personal pictures, commercial pictures, free pictures etc.

Personally, thats why im not a fan of stuff like chat-gpt, yeah it looks and sounds impressive, but its all a massive exercise in stealing data and using it without permission.

Do you use Firefox? It's a known issue with vBulletin and Firefox: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...62e465f7b8db9e (there is kind of a fix on the last page)

Hello hello hello

testing damn lines

Wow. I think fixed? Thanks, TCD, I had asked about before but the answer was that it's something with vb itself, not FF.

So I applied the fix for firefox
Firefox user should try to refresh EAB with CTRL+F5 and see if it's better now.
Code:
	// deal with newline characters
	if (is_browser('mozilla'))
	{
 $text = preg_replace('#(?<!
|
|\r)(\r\n|\n|\r)#', ' ', $text);
 $text = preg_replace('#
#', '', $text);
	}

Let's see if that worked
There shouldn't be an empty line above.

Here should only be one.

Edit: Yay, it worked
Thank you, RCK

Hmm, seems that if you quote somebody it removes the line breaks from the quoted text now.
