A570 Connected to an A1200?
I happen to have an A570. Was gifted by an old friend, with a bunch of CDs and CDTV stuff. The A570 seems to only connect to an A500, of which I don't have. Is there a way to connect an A570 to either an A1200 or possibly an A2000?
I realize this is out there a bit, but you never learn till you ask... ;-) |

No chance to an A1200 - possibly to an A2000 but you would likely run in to issues - I've never heard of anyone trying it. It would be messy as you'd need to invent a cable from the zorro slots to look like an A500 side expansion slot, move it out of the case and then potentially still have zorro bus issues.
If you want to use an A570, just pick up an A500 and make sure you end up with at least 1MB chip ram, either by adding 512K trapdoor RAM and modding the mainboard or a megachip or equivalnet (or A500plus). |

No, it's not possible. A1200 have PCMCIA slot where A500 have slot for plugging A570.
Instead You can use any IDE (PATA)* CD/DVD with A1200 (but it needs some modifications). Some interesting modification with slim DVD drive. [ Show youtube player ] *Or any with IDE (PATA) converter. |

Nope, needs the Zorro 1 slot. It essentially turns the 500 into a CDTV.

I had a feeling this wasn't something realistically plausible. Picking an A500 up sounds like the best option... My collection of Amigas seems to keep growing... LOL!

The A570 isn't particularly great. For maximum compatibility with CDTV titles you need a certain version of A500 (KS1.3 + 1Mbyte ChipRAM). But if you add in the 2MB FastRAM the A570 can take and a SCSI controller and an external SCSI drive and it becomes useful. Don't spend too much money.

A2000 should be fairly easy, kind of just the reverse of a one-Zorro-II-slot adapter for A500/A2000. One caveat is that it needs to be the last board in the Zorro II autoconfig chain as there are only a config in but not a config out pin on the A500/A1000 expansion connector.
A1200 would be rather complicated, but since there afaik are Zorro bus expansion boards for A1200, it's technically possible. If you were to make an interface yourself you'd need to make sure to pull the 68020 signals that tells the cpu that the bus at the current address is 16 bits wide, and do this with all addresses that the A570 would take. You might also need to insert wait states as the A500/A1000 expansion connector runs at 7MHz while the internal expansion port of an A1200 runs at 14MHz. I would say that it's not worth the effort with an A1200, and hasn't been since late 90's when ide cd roms became cheap. Back in the day when A1200 were new it could had made sense to make an adapter that adds an A500/A1000 compatible expansion port, perhaps combined with fast ram, to be able to reuse stuff like an A590 or A570. Nowadays an A570 seems mostly like a collectable item that you put on your display shelf, either alone or combined with an A500 that's mostly kept in stock configuration. |

Are you aware that these things (A570 and A590) are very pricey these days? And I think price will grow even more in the upcoming years.
Just don't burn it with A1200 or A2000. If you buy Amiga 500 and sell it as a complete working set, it can be pretty good price, or you can enjoy it yourself. Also, bunch of these CD's and CDTV titles sounds interesting. Maybe you can find something rare, and upload and contribute to the Amiga history. |
