Horrifically slow audio with Eagleplayer on FS-UAE
So I'm continuing to try hard to do more with Amiga and I got Eagleplayer working on an A1200 / Workbench 3.1 install. Sort of. I say "sort of" because it'll play an uncompressed .wav file alright but if I do an .mp3 the audio stutters to no end and basically the whole system locks up and I have to restart it. What exactly was the target hardware configuration for Eagleplayer? I tried changing a bunch of settings around memory and tried different CPUs. I understand the 68060 is the most powerful of the lot but I couldn't get any of them (i.e. the 60 series) to boot. Anything else I can do?
EDIT: Actually now that I come back to it, .wav playback sounds like a vaporwave remix of the original song (i.e. heavily slowed down) but it doesn't lock up the whole system Last edited by readyready15728; 17 September 2017 at 09:35. |

I've made a little headway now. I set up FS-UAE to emulate the Toccata sound card and installed toccata.library in Libs. Now .wav playback is normal but .mp3 playback continues to stutter and lock up the system. Any pointers?

What hardware and OS are you running FS-UAE on? Also, are you trying to do this without JIT enabled?

First it might be better trying DeliTracker2 rather than EP2, it eats quite less cpu and its mpeg audio player will not freeze the system (at least it didn't on my 030 even in the worse modes).
mp3 playback is computationnally expensive (not by todays standards but for an old Amiga) and can not be done comfortably with less than a 68060. However the cpu choice does not matter much in emulators. The most important is to have cpu emulation in "fastest possible" mode. The problem with wave replay is that even the emulated hardware might well apply the old (but not good) 28khz limit (which does not occur for Toccata) so you get horrendeous slowdown if you play e.g. 44.1khz (like a vinyl played at wrong speed). You can try Play16 (available on Aminet) for your waves and see if it sounds better. |

I ultimately managed to get perfect MP3 playback. The following shows how I did it:
