Of course I am, the screenshot I posted is from Atari Tetris, because the Amiga game i'm looking for looks EXACTLY like this one. EXACTLY like it!
I am looking for an Amiga game definitely. The game show was created by Amiga fanatics who painted the Amiga letters with black so it would stand out noticeably in front of the cameras ;D |

Could it be Tetris (aka Amiga Tetris) released by Infogrames in 1989?

Ignore me. The Infogrames 1989 release seems to be the same as Spectrum Holobyte's Tetris release. Weird! Must confirm this when I get home.
Guess I learnt something interesting for HOL purposes. Sorry if I got your hopes up, though, Akira |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Infogrames published this game everywhere but the US where we got the Spectrum Holobyte release. It's also a wretched version of the game...one of the worst I have ever played.

@Twistin'
We got the Spectrum Holobyte release of Tetris here in Australia, so I gather Infogrames only published the game in Europe. What puzzles me is the difference in publication years. In HOL the Spectrum Holobyte game is listed as published in 1991., whereas my boxed copy says (c) 1987 and the Infogrames release is (c) 1989 IIRC. Did Spectrum Holobyte release two versions of Tetris: The Soviet Challenge four years apart? Also, why didn't Mirrorsoft (instead of Infogrames) publish all the Spectrum Holobyte releases of Tetris in Europe? After all, Mirrorsoft and Spectrum Holobyte were both owned by Robert Maxwell at the time. Bloody confusing! |

I had the original disk for this very version. I believe it was 1986 or 1987 on the disk, red print. Found it in a second hand "bargain basement" in Blackpool, around 1991. I've since sold my drawer of Amiga games though.
I did try installing it with WHDLoad, but had some trouble if I recall. It did once work, but was temperamental. I'm surprised you liked this version though, I hated it! Twintris was my favourite version for Amiga by a long way. Edit: Now that I think about it some more, mine might have been the Mirrorsoft version. I might have the box still somewhere. No that's not it. pLEASE look at the first pic I psted, the game I'm looking for looks EXACTLY like that one,. I'd say it's almost a carbon copy of the Atari Tetris arcade.

According to my database, it was released in 1989. And my AKA is not "Tetris: The Soviet Challenge", but "Amiga Tetris". Whether it is accurate or not, I have Infogrames as the developer. I'll pull out my manuals tonight and verify it all, but as best as I can tell, the PC version came out maybe in 1987-ish? Judging by the horrendous Amiga version, it's a port from that godawful PC release. I posted a link to a Tetris info site some time back that was real informative about that game's curious history, but I don't remember it addressing specific release dates for various platforms. And this should be changed in that HOL entry, too. Whereas _I_ thought that 'Amiga Tetris' was just the name written on the menu bar at the top of the window, but not the actual game name. But as you have the original, Twist: is 'Amiga Tetris' mentioned on the box? Last edited by andreas; 27 April 2004 at 03:19. |

Well, it seems my database was wrong, which is probably why I never entered this into HOL. The box calls the game simply TETRIS, but at the bottom just above the Spectrum Holobyte logo it does say The Soviet Challenge, although this is not with the title. The description on the back only calls it Tetris, as well as the box's spines. But The Soviet Challenge seems reasonable to differentiate the SH version. Apparently in my database, I used the t-bar for this alt title. Do we want to use this in HOL or stay where we are at?
The copyright info on the back of the box says: Copyright© 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 AcademySoft-ELORG. All rights reserved. TETRIS is a trademark of AcademySoft-ELORG. TETRIS copyright and trademark licensed to Andromeda Software Limited and sublicensed to Mirrorsoft Ltd. and SPHERE, INC. Original concept by Alexey Pazhitnov. AAAANYWAY, still no dice. I'm changing the topic's subject a bit to see if it attracts a bit more the attention... I wasn;t lying when I offered a prize to the founder of this game.

Well now...I would suspect, although I don't know if this is absolutely correct, that you are talking about the Tengen version of Tetris. Tengen was an off-shoot of Atari, so it would make sense that they would make computer versions of the Atari arcade machine. There were Nintendo lawsuit problems (check out the Tetris history on the net), and the Tengen versions got pulled from the shelves. That could have been what happened. So try a search for Tengen Tetris and see if you can come up with it. I'm not entirely sure that there was an Amiga version of it, but it might be what you are looking for.

I am aware of Tengen's Tetris, it's a fave of mne on the NES, but it doesn't look exactly like the arcade one, and it is not available on the Amiga. It barely made it to the NES, so..
Thanks for trying tho |
