Telling OCS/ECS Agnus apart

How can I tell whether my A500 has an OCS or ECS Agnus chip? Do I have to lift the cover?

What's the easiest way to get the contents of the LHA archive to an Amiga floppy (or an ADF file?)

I had SysInfo V3.22 on a Disk so I ran that and got STD AGNUS - 512K for DMA/Gfx, that's an OCS right?

If you have a copy of the 1.x Extras disk, run AmigaBASIC, click in the main window and type:
POKEW 14676444,0
and press return. Then type
POKEW 14676444,32
and press return.

If there was any change in the display either time, you have the ECS Agnus.

you can boot wb and go to preferences/overscan, if the full overscan is 768*580 you have an pal OCS agnus (8371) / denise combo. ECS parts have a smaller full overscan.

Workbench 1.3.2 would work for that?

Just run sysinfo then. :-)

The 512k Agnus is OCS.

SysInfo shows 512K STD AGNUS, I guess it's OCS, thanks

In that image it looks like an OCS Denise with an ECS Agnus, but despite having an ECS Agnus the RAM is still configured as 512k Chip/512k Fast.

Oh nice.. Is that why this Amiga benches as 1.08x a normal A500? What additional benefits would I get from upgrading to a Super Denise and/or 1MB chip memory? And I suppose this all means it's a Rev6?

It is most likely a rev6 since you have the 1MB Agnus.

A super denise would enable VGA refresh rates and a bunch of other unusable display modes. Really, save your money. The A3000 is the only ECS machine where the better screen modes are worth using.

1MB chip (better make it switchable) is handy for those large protracker modules. :-)

The 1.08 might be because of the slow fast, but then again it might not. Sysinfo is not very accurate.

Super Denise won't do much good for anyone. It only provides screen modes with higher resolutions and less colors. It's not used for games at all. Maybe productivity.

Changing the 512k Chip Ram to 1mb Chip Ram is something you should definitely do as it provides higher compatibility with almost everything, especially games.

Your ECS Agnus (8372A/B) also gives you the ability to switch between NTSC and PAL, but even though I am in America, I hard converted my system to PAL since almost all software out there now is PAL and while some games work fine, most will have sound or graphics issues, and others won't boot at all.
