CD-ROM support on A500/A600
Hi all,
what are the possible fashions of getting a CD-ROM to be readable on an A500 and an A600? |

A500: external SCSI adapter, connect your SCSI CD drive to it. Another option is Mika Leinonen's mkide68k which should support ATAPI drives. IIRC rhere are also drivers for some other IDE controllers in the ide-fix package.

I thought about using the SCSI connector at the back of my A590. Is this a clever way to go?

That is an excellent idea.

You'd have to be mad to do anything else. However it's still not an ideal solution, you'll need to either get an Amiga-specific external drive, or use a standard internal one with an adapter to convert the DB-25 SCSI connector to an 50 pin IDC one, as well as a suitable power supply.

External 5.25" SCSI cases should still be pretty easy to find, also ones that already have the CD-ROM drive in them. :-)

So, it does mean I can use about any SCSI unit, internal or external, provided I can handle the wiring/power issue, right? I mean, it's not absolutely mandatory for the drive to have the C= brand on it for it to work on a Miggy, is it?
Do you think it would be too heavy an electric load to hack the power from the lines inside of the A590? And then how does WB handle the drive? Do I need some driver? |

There are no C= brand external SCSI CD-ROM drives.
Just go to some person who used to like classic Macs or old Unix workstations, they'll have a pile of external SCSI CD-ROMs. Perhaps buy one of those cheap chinese HDD power adaptors instead. But if you want to make it neat, just get an external SCSI case for the CD-ROM. It is by no means a rare item. |

If the A590 has a bypas port then you could slot on the A570 for a super super wide Amiga

A590 HD+ DOES NOT have a expansion connector for further devices.

Yeah Hewitson, more like I thought... nice, clean DB25 SCSI port on the back. Thanks for the pic anyway, that's nice.
To answer rkauer, who replied to a thread on Amibay: - I did upgrade good'ol A590 to v7.0 ROMs - speaking of SCSI, what does it mean to "do the termination correctly"? - why would the Amiga not boot if no CD is inserted? and can it be just about any CD sitting in the drive for the computer to boot? |

Something like this, but requires an external case.
Or something like this, already in a case. Or go crazy and get something like this. Something to consider is a CD-RW drive. It has two advantage, you might be able to burn disks (assuming you have CPU power and hard drive space), but also, and this is more important, it will be more likely to be able to read burnt disks. And you might need a scsi cable. Probably one of these or one of these or one of these. |

With a SCSI controller that supports DMA, CPU power is irrelevant.

I am thinking it might be an issue where writing that needs buffering??? too many read/writes and slow down? It's a long time since I had to be concerned about such things. Also, now I think of it, RAM might be good for buffering, too. |

OverDose, man, you sure can snoop things out of eBay! I've been searching for these items, entered "SCSI enclosure", "CD-ROM external case" and many others, plus lots of possible combinations between them, without real success. eBay is weird with country management -- depending on what the URL looks like in the end (.com or .de or .ch) I never get the same results. Why don't they use .com to browse the combination of all countries?...
Anyway it looks like choosing an RW version is an excellent hint indeed. |

If you go to ebay.de for example, you'll only get results from Germany. You need to click Worldwide if you want to get results from other countries.

Oh is there a button? Because, when the results are scarce, it automatically displays a selection of foreign items under the original search results (and this selection is different for every domain, be it "de", "ch", "com"). And I thought that this was it.
Need to pay more attention I guess. Thanks guys |
