Lightbulb Checkmate monitors kickstarter

I can not understand why is there no discussion on Checkmate's "father" Stephen Jones monitors on kickstarter.

Campaign is near an end without success. I did not support since I am happy with generic monitor and OSSC and also project is very complicated ("modular").

Any thoughts on this monitors ?

I bought the checkmate+ case through the first kickstarter and it’s still new in the box (looking to trade for a mech keyboard (or regular one in great shape) for my A1200 btw) but I’m very happy with my monitors and separate good quality speakers so I won’t be supporting this kickstarter. Also price is pretty steep this time of year but I do hope it gets funded as it looks like a quality product

It looks unfinished and wildly expensive, and I’m not convinced the guy making it actually knows much about monitors vs. making pretty cases for things. The “buy without panel and you can buy one later” approach is ludicrous.

Agree that it’s way too expensive for what it’s coming with.
I wanted 2 of it, I will unfortunately not even support the campaign.

while i like my retro stuff, a "proper" 4:3 display just isnt what i'm looking for, i can live with a stretched display in all honesty on my cheapo 27" lcd. The case looked ncie but i already funded the old X500 Case many moons ago which i find more appealing.

I backed. It's expensive yes (remember the LCD/LED panel is extra). But in black the 1089 will go well with my CDTV. It's Modular bays will be a nice home for my MiSTer and my OSSC too.

The Checkmate one isn’t even a 4:3 display, it’s a 5:4, and while that doesn’t bother me it’s clear through the rambling in the kickstarter that they don’t really understand the difference.

This may change if they somehow manage to fit the 20” 1600x1200 panel in it.

It's not the retro monitor I'm personally dreaming of, so unfortunately I passed on this one.

I too looked at this as I long for a lcd display that will not have the dreaded motion blur. I am not an expert but someone once mentioned to me on here it is usually to do with the changing of 50hz to 60hz by your monitor that causes this blur.

So I would want to know, if this monitor would have a no motion blur capability.

I was a little shocked to find out there is a GBS8220 in there and also an OSSC albeit optional! I was hoping to hear something new and special that usurped both of these devices.

I have an GBS8220 and from my experience using it with the custom firmware, it is the best up-scaler for bang to buck. It also seems to be more compatible with a variety of different monitors unlike my dealings with an OSSC. But even with the Clock Mod on the GBS (this allows the input signal to be output at same hz as it is going into the GBS) it doesn't really make a difference if all the LCD monitors (or most of them) are changing the signal into 60hz anyways and therefore giving us that awful motion blare. I know I could get a CRT from somewhere but it's just not practical for me.

I'm hoping someone tells me that this Checkmate project is the answer to the modern Amiga monitor solution.

This is highly unlikely to solve any existing problems that LCDs have, but nobody knows for sure as there have been no independent reviews of it from reliable sources.

50hz>60hz conversion is unlikely to cause motion blur but it would cause tearing. You are best off getting something like the Dell P1917S with an OSSC etc which does support 50hz natively rather than waiting to see what this turns out like (after putting your £300+ down).

Some weeks ago I was thinking I would give it a try and back it. However, in the end, although it has a nice retro chassis, and after reading some other people's thoughts, I think I'll pass. When my CRT dies I'll look for some alternate solution.

Yes, but the CRT displays it is trying to ape are 4:3 ratio.

Yep I decided to pass as well because I already have a nice CRT.

Maybe if it had a OLED panel with some cool retro up-scaling solution built in (retrotink style) then it would be more compelling to someone like me. Yes I know you cannot get OLED panels that small or in a retro aspect ratio but that's what I would like nonetheless

I hear you, but how can CRTs be 4:3 when PAL resolution is 5:4? Pixel geometry? The shape of CRT pixels? Under/Overscan?

Yeah the olden days 4:3 displays would display non-square pixels. I use a 5:4 display with my A1200 and it looks great through a digital scandoubler due to PAL pixel matching but everything clearly looks different (squashed horizontally) compared to when it’s displayed on a 4:3 screen.

I don’t mind this and it’s probably impossible to do anything else now but I think it’s important to be clear on it - originally the Checkmate screen was marketed as a 4:3 display until it was pointed out to them that it wasn’t. As now mentioned in the kickstarter blurb it can however do a letterboxed 4:3 mode.

This not so easy and definitely not intuitive problem...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect...e_aspect_ratio
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_aspect_ratio
https://www.animemusicvideos.org/gui...ectratios.html

btw even CRT real display aspect ratio depends on many things - as it is controlled trough magnetic field in CRT deflection joke... it vary, even APL affect DAR on most consumer CRT's - only some professional CRT's are equipped with some form of HV stabilization circuitry (also HV source is capable way more power) so eventual display changes are not so problematic.
