Legal Game Downloads (List)

I'm compiling a list of legal sites for ex-commercial software. Unfortunately I've noticed that some of the download links don't work anymore, but there's still some good stuff to be had. Also, many of the sites haven't been updated in ages.

Here's what I have so far. Please add your own links.

Amiga Legal Emulation
This site has the entire (?) Assassins collection.

Ami Sector One
I think we're all familiar with this one. Tons of good games here. Last updated on Dec 23, 2001.

Amiga Arena
Some full version games, including Vulcan Software's "Burnout", "Time Keepers" and the adventure game, "Valhalla 3".

Amiga CD Legal Dumping Projekt
Full CD games for burning. So far they have: Chuck Rock, Premiere, Banshee, Super Putty, IK+, Myth, Oldtimer (German) and Beneath a Steel Sky.

Amigaland
German web site with some good games like Pinball Fantasies CD32.

Back To The Roots
What!? I've never heard of this site before.

The preeminent legal emulation site.

Borrowed Time
Assassins collection and 16 games like Soccer Kid, Cool Croc Twins and Oscar. Some links don't work though.

Factor 5
Developers Factor 5 have released a few games to the public: Katakis, R-Type and BC Kid (guess where I got my avatar from?). They also offer a Turrican soundtrack and Turrican backup games which you can only download if you own the originals.

Free Amiga Games
The author of this site got permission to release Digital Illusions Pinball series of games and Benefactor.

Gremlin Graphics Worlds
Some Gremlin games which aren't available on BTTR.

Melon
Famous demo group, Melon Dezign offer two of their commercial games: Jimmy's Fantastic Journey (includes copy protection diagram in IFF format) and Naughty Ones.

Mental Image
I've never heard of these developers but they've released some of their old games. Two game disk collections (one game has graphics provided by Jeff Minter) and three fruit machine simulators.

Thalion Software Webshrine
Lots of excellent Thalion games, including one of the best platformers ever, Lionheart. (Works perfect under WinUAE.)

World of Classics
This site offers 356 games, many of them not on BTTR. Also includes many Assassins disks.

It's nice to have legal copies of games because there's no guilt.

I used to pirate a lot in my younger days but now I prefer to stay as legal as possible. Unfortunately most of the Amiga games will never be released freely because many software houses/developers have gone out of business and it'd take ages to track people down. Therefore, the only option is to avoid those games completely and watch them fade into obscurity* or choose to break the law in the name of preservation. (But, most people probably just want to play free games.)

Did I ever tell you how pretty I look wearing an eye patch? It's quite becoming. No! Must forgot past... must.... must....

I know it's not ex-commercial software, but ther is a lot of free games for downloading

Actually, there has been some commercial software released on Aminet if you look around. There is also an Aminet games CD which features a number of commercial games, though one reviewer of the CD mentioned that he'd never heard of most of the games. Unfortunately many of these games are not in the current Aminet archive.

Why is it that here at EAB links to illegal game download sites are frequently shared and games are regurlarly uploaded into the Zone, but if anyone asks for the Kickroms its a BIG no no?
As far as I can see they are both illegal and equally wrong.
Dont get me wrong, I copy games and always have but Ive always wondered about this apparent hypocrisy.

Im sure theres a reasonable explanation though...right?

Hmmmm, I guess because as Amiga Inc is still a company (well kinda, its just Bill McEwan and his grandma as far as im concerned

) which still has a commercial interest. And as they havent given permission (like Amstrad for example) its a big no no.

Whereas with the old games most of the software houses dont give a s**t because they cant make money out of them anymore - they only care if people try to sell them for $$$ instead of themselves. And most of em are sadly gone anyway.

I dont think the Amiga is the exception to the rule ya know. In most instances of old computer platforms theres always a different "status" in terms of level of dodgyness between the old commercial games and the OS needed to run them.

It's unfortunate that the TOSEC team doesn't follow this example of only making available ex-commercial software. (Okay, I know TOSEC doesn't provide actual files but their database is used by download sites.) I was shocked to see the Amiga kickstart ROMs - even the Amiga Forever encrypted ROMs - available for download on TOSEC archives. It certainly won't help persuade companies that emulation is all about the preservation of old software when people are pirating software that's still available commercially. It's a shame.

Offers a full version of Arcade Snooker AGA (arcsnook.dms) which was only available on a CU Amiga coverdisk. This is an excellent game!

Full ECS and AGA versions of the game Clockwiser, which was developed by Team Hoi, the creators of the platformer Hoi. (Remember Hoi AGA Remix?) The author of this page has been given permission to redistribute the games.
