Super Skidmarks unplayably slow

Apologies if this has already been covered, but I've searched EAB and can't find any mention of this.

I'm trying to play Super Skidmarks AGA on an emulated (via WinUAE 1.6.0) A1200 with 8MB Fast RAM. I've tried both the version from WHDownload site and a cracked ADF version, and with both it is painfully slow.

I *think* I previously got the same result with WinUAE 1.5.3.

I would assume it's simply because the laptop PC I'm using is pretty low-end, but other games that I'd imagine are similarly demanding from the same rough period (e.g. Banshee AGA, Alien Breed 3D) are okay.

Are there any obvious settings I can change on WinUAE? I've fiddled around but can't see anything that makes a difference...

(If it's relevant, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1501 with a Sempron 3500+ CPU (I think @ 1.8GHz) with only 512MB RAM (actually 448, as 64MB is reserved for on-board graphics), running a (very stripped-down) Windows Vista Home Basic).

Yes,I have the same issue. It's a WinUAE failure because SuperSkidmarks is a fast game in a plain A1200.

I can only play fast with CPU 040 and JIT enable,ie ClassicWB powerful configuration.

Your answer fails.

Full screen scrolling in hires (games are rarely in hires) = CPU power needed.

But I'm only talking about Super Skidmarks in lores mode (I think it's one of the few games which allows you to choose whether to play it in lores or hires mode). I haven't even tried it in hires yet.

Looking at the game (in lores), I can't see why it would be more demanding of the Amiga than, say, Roadkill which plays fine.

Will try playing it in '040 mode later on and report back later.

Also I don't know if I had JIT enabled or not, so will try that too.

Superskidmarks "lores" is in reality hires mode, "hires" means superhires

Oh... so that means I probably won't enjoy Super Skidmarks till I buy a new beefier PC? :-(

I would have thought it should be OK - Semkpron 3500+ ought to be able to cope with emulation no problem! Super skidmarks runs fine on real A500 / A1200 so why should it be slow under emulation?

I have tested it on my Athlon 3600+ Dual core - it is definately running slow!

I thought we talked about SuperSkidmarks AGA which surely does not run on an A500..

Guess why I always want FULL and EXACT NAME of game.. (EDIT: and which hardware configuration, game works differently on AGA and OCS..)

ADDED: there are many A1200 programs that run slower than on basic A1200 without JIT enabled, especially if CPU is "slow".

Details and more details. Slow = useless information. (hint: there is that CPU% thing..)

Ok - I'm testing the WhdLoad CD32 AGA version using A1200 quickstart config + 8MB Fast RAM - I am using the CF hard disk from my real A1200 (Which has 8MB Fast RAM)

On real A1200 the game is nearly twice as fast as it is under emulation.

JIT makes little difference.

The CPU% always shows between 100% and 150% for me in WinUAE - even in workbench!

Let me guess : You have 'Fastest possible, but maintain chipset timing' set for the CPU? Ever tried to set it to 'Adjustable between CPU and chipset'?

Okay, a little more information (I know I'm being a bit of a noob here, so forgive me!)

(EDIT: Forgot to say, I am using the CD32 WHDLoad install version, as downloaded from www.whdownload.com)

If I have 'CPU Emulation Speed' set to 'Fastest Possible, But Maintain Chipset Timing' (which I already had on) the CPU speed is set at exactly 100%, but the game is unplayably slow.

I tried TheCyberDruid's suggestion of changing the above setting to 'Adjustable Between CPU and Chipset' with both sliders set to the extreme left. Interestingly... the displayed CPU speed now varies between approx 55% - 60% (which I guess is because of my low-end PC CPU?) BUT the actual game play is much smoother and faster.

Any more thoughts anyone?

(BTW I am *very* impressed that Toni has bothered to address my query when he doesn't have to, and hope he doesn't take any of this as a criticism of his amazing product!)

Good to hear it worked for you (well at least to a certain degree). If you have access to another PC with more 'horse power', you could see if it's really your CPU that makes the game run slower than on a real Amiga 1200. Also check if you have any filter enabled and if so, disable it and see if that makes a difference.

Hmm.. There is something wrong (possibly very wrong configuration) if JIT+fastest possible goes over ~101%. (but this wrong topic for that)

Does non-whd version work better? (It is possible whd version has fixes that are not compatible "too fast" CPU speed)
