Which version of Amiga OS?

Hi all

Recently upgraded from 3.1 to 3.9 to find it is dog slow on my A3000 (see specs in sig).

I liked the speed of 3.1 and had no real issues. Someone suggested upgrading but I don't see any real benefits.

What OS is best for me and if it is 3.1 is there a way to downgrade without formatting? I'm not bothered by eye candy especially as I can only display 16 colours max at one time!

Thanks

The real point of os3.9 is the upgraded icon system.....so it's recommended because it's nicest ...but I see that you don't have a gfx card and 16 colors is the maximum ...so...get one and enjoy a full colourful workbench

If only. Spent too much on Amiga stuff at the moment! Maybe in the future. Back to 3.1 it is then unless 3.5 is much quicker than 3.9.

I'd forget all about 3.9 and 3.5 if I was you. Just stick with 3.1 and enjoy a much smoother WB experience.

I´m running OS 3.9 with 128 colours on an A1200/030.
No speed issues...

So, ECS is the rascal.

Why not try Bloodwych´s Classic Workbench Adv.?

Gone back to vanilla 3.1 for the time being. I will try ClassicWB this week when I have finished playing about whitening plastic bits and modding my case

Thoughts (mine):

3.9: 'Nicest' but a bit bloated by AOS standards - with a bit of chopping + a few hacks can be made to work well on surprisingly low-end Amigas.
3.5: Like a 'rough' 3.9 but rather less resource hungry.
3.1: Fine everywhere but takes a lot of hacks to make it 'funky'.
and...
2.05 on a 3.1 KS: The dog's danglies when it comes to speed & low resource use...
...2.05 is surprisingly compatible / functional resting on top of a 3.1 KS. WB 3.1 bits can be retro-fitted if you have 'issues'.

...or don't bother with the hard work & go for one of the (very good) pre-made versions.

What's the spec of your A3000 again?

25MHz 030 + 2Mbyte Chip RAM + 16 Mbyte Fast RAM?

If you are not already using SFS as your hard drive file system, that will give a large speed boost.

If you are not using any system software patches then you should consider something like SystemPatch 3.3 beta or some equivalent even on WB3.1.

Correct that is my setup. I'm happy with 3.1. for the time being. I will look at playing with speeding it up in the future but at the moment it will do.
