Broken DS, need housing/case

Howdy folks,

Wonder if anyone can offer me advice on this, I bought Mrs Fitz a new DS to replace the one she'd broken a hinge on.

So she's happy now

But I want to fix up the old one to use myself. I see on ebay there are loads of vendors selling replacement shells, and they're pretty cheap.

But has anyone tried any of these? I'm looking for someone to suggest a seller that they've used as I don't want to end up with a cheap and nasty one.

Ideally I like a genuine replacement to keep it as new.

Anyone able help me out here?

Its a stock FAT DS by the way.

Cheers!

Steve.

Steve,

I recently re-cased an old version DS. I had to also change the upper screen flexicable which runs through the hinge to the connector on the main board. If your upper screen is working OK then just buy a replacement case the same colour as the one you have, DO NOT play around with your DS until the new case arrives as the flexicable is the hardest thing to replace on the old models. Now all you need to do is remove the 4 screws from the front of the top screen and disconnect the speakers and flexicable from the PCB and remove the screen, ease out the hinges and swap the new upper screen plastics and add the hinges then reconnect the bits and bobs and try it out.

Hopefully the flexicable is intact and you have basically fixed your broken DS and now have a spare base and battery cover plus buttons, if however the cable was broken then its a lot harder but do-able. Wait until you have everything ready before stripping down the DS, its a bugger to fit the upper screen cable from memory, so only do it when the time is right and everything is at hand (I wish I had )

The one I got is now in a nice Black shell but it originally was a white/silver one :-

Steve, i've not seen the older fat DS but that DS Lite you bought from me, the case come from Dealextreme in china bud.
On the lite's the screen ribbon cable is also a nasty ba**ard to get right and through the tiny little space they give you without creasing and breaking it so i imagine the older one is just as bad as allen says.

You can also get the Fat DS shell's cheap from Dealextreme too and they provide customer reviews.

Mike

PS, you will need a triwing screwdriver for some of the screws. Don't try and use a philips head like i did with my nintendo wii, just strips the head off and you have to find an alternative way to get em out

Hey Steve,

I have a triwing screwdriver you could borrow for this job if you need one.

Hey,

Thanks for all the replies

Bippy, would be interested in that case of yours but just got hit with £90 vet bills so flat broke, can you hold it for a week or two?

Is it normal Grey colour?

Cheers,

Steve.

Hey Bippy,

Sorry forgot about this post!

Sorry to keep you waiting but I'd like to replace it with a standard grey case if possible.

Thanks anyway.

Steve.
