A1200 HDD read/write head stuck(!)

Hi,

I have a delicate problem with my 120MB Conner drive. When I´m trying to boot my Amiga 1200, the HDD start spinning but my OS doesn´t boot. The reason I found out, by opening the drive (I know I shouldn´t but I was desperate), was that the read/write arm was stuck. So I nudged the arm a bit and voila! - the drive booted up. However when I did a cold start the arm went back to it´s original position and once again I couldn´t boot from my HDD.

(Warm starts works fine - the drive boots as normal)

So my question is if there´s any way to prevent the read/write arm to go back to that same position - or pehaps set it´s position manually by a program.

Well you probably realise now, that you need to find another HD asap, partition and format it, then copy everything over from your broken disk to the new one once you get the old disk running again.

Then take the old disk outside, grab a hammer and give that old drive a nice beating, it'll make you feel better.

No, you can't stop the drive from autoparking.
No, you shouldn't use it more than absolutely necessary now that you went and opened it.

Good luck with the copying process! Don't open the drive more often that you have to.
