Games that define Amiga

Which games are most typical for our Amiga? What would you show to somebody who has never heard of it before?
This is not just another most popular thread, but should decide on which games' compatibility with the AROS Kickstart replacement ought to be tested first.

For example
  • Turrican 2
  • Moonstone
  • Gods
  • Lemmings
  • Dune 2
  • Speedball 2
  • Heimdall
  • Shadow of the Beast 3
  • Cannon Fodder
  • Populous 2
  • Lotus 2

(Some of them I've never played. It's just what comes to mind when I hear Amiga.)

most of those games would only use kickstart to boot in the bootblock, after that, AROS kickstart replacement would be redundant.

So long as AROS can handle booting disks, most of those games should operate fine.

Populous 2 and Dune 2 being the only AmigaDOS file loading games on that list, the rest dump the system on boot up.

You have to include Defender of the Crown, Ambermoon and Lionheart as well as Elvira Mistress of the Dark (I know it was also on PC etc. but the Amiga version is where the great atmosphere is at)

Turrican 2 does it for me. It's the game that screams "AMIGAAAAAAAAAAAAA" the most. Also battle Squadron. But Turrican 2 above everything.

Oh, let's not forget Another World

I think this depends on exactly what is meant. I'd say it's easy to list a bunch of games but if we're talking what literally jumps to mind when you think of Amiga, then that's a little different

Difficult though thinking about it because although there's lots of cool games, they don't all scream Amiga

F18
Turrican 2
Speedball2
Shadow of the Beast1
Rocket Ranger
Awesome
Walker
Robocod
Blood Money

Wot? No one mentioned Virocop? http://hol.abime.net/1575

Simply THE best robot shoot'em up on the Amiga.

I hope some cool dude creates a Whdload slave for the ECS version.

Colourful, neat multi-directional scrolling, jazzy music and addictive!

Leander
Legend of faerghail
Lemmings (all except the 3rd)
Lotus 1 & 2

Based on the above and the subject line (not Great Games, but games that "define" the Amiga.), I'd go with:

Faery Tale Adventure
Mindwalker
Defender of the Crown
Blood Money
It Came from the Desert
Shadow of the Beast
Stunt Car Racer
Out of this World (Another World)
Lemmings
Alien Breed
Dragon's Lair

(I suppose Turrican should be there, but I haven't played it that much actually...)

Those "defined" the Amiga for me.. Not saying they are all great and there are lots of great games that I haven't listed... But.. ;-)

Games that define the Amiga are games that aren't on Atari ST.

Hybris, Battle Squadron...

And... Pacmania because it's so ugly on Atari ST compared to the Amiga version.

So, I talked to an old friend yesterday who used to have an A500 and here's what sprung to his mind when I asked him about this:

kick off 2
sensible soccer
cannon fodder
shadow of the beast
pinball dreams
gods
F-29
north and south
xenon 2
lemmings
speedball 2
another world
chaos engine
defender of the crown
wings
turrican 2
super cars 2
agony
lotus 2
project x
alien syndrome or alien breed

that was of course after a few minutes of him thinking about them and asking me about the titles after he described the game. We're still not sure if he meant alien syndrome or alien breed as he mentioned a top down alien-killing shooter with strict time limit. I asked him if it had shops where you could power-up , but he didn't recall that, so, it could be either.

If I had to add a few games to his list, I'd add rocket ranger, it came from the desert, gianna sisters, z-out, battle squadron, populus, unreal, F-18, dungeon master, moonstone and maybe megalomania, lionheart, rick dangerous 2 and flashback too.

So many games screaming amiga....no wonder the platform has survived so long after commodore's demise!
