Hdd 'thinks' it is full at startup

Hi everyone, I have a question please. Sometimes my a500 hdd takes a long time to boot and loads way too much. The reason is because it 'thinks' it is full while it is booting. When i check its capacity outright in WB it reads full but after a while ( a few minutes) it shows its real capacity that of course is not full. It has always around 10-15% free space. It is 120 mb total. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

It's not full, it is validating. Most likely you switched it off or reset it while it was still writing to disk.

If you turned it off while it was not writing, but that still appens every time, then that means your hard-disk is breaking

That's probably the case, yeah. Thanks.

Sorry, my bad - I just have an unlimited fondness for that little green smiley guy and I try to stick him in almost every post!

Anyway, I saw similiar cases in old Windows PCs (yeah, I know, it's a different thing [and they suck when compared to Amigas! ] but...) where HDs suddenly started checking themselves at every boot even if the computer was turned off properly. It turned out that the HD was going bust, and it did after a while.

If it keeps happening, keep backups!

Hehe, no worries.

Well, Thomas was right. In every case it happened while the hdd was working so I hope that was why. If not...

It looks ok now though. I was just curious.

Validating... a huge pain... When the computer boots and the drive still blinks it is validating.. once it finishes everything should be ok. I finally switched to SFS and do not have that problem anymore.

This program delays the reset until all write operations are finished.

Of course it cannot delay a power failure, so you should always wait a few seconds before you switch it off.

This only works with machines that have the soft reset feature.. The A500 is a hard reset machine.

I also swicthed to SFS and few months later back to FFS. Not because FFS is better, I did it because with FFS there is no problem wich you can't solve. For SFS there is no proper tools to fix problems. Problem with SFS is deadend.
