help newbie screwed up.!!
Can anyone help.
I have just taken delivery of a Amiga 1200 I bought from Ebay. The hard drive was a mess, and I decided to re-install. I managed to create a install disk, as I did not have one as part of my disk set. I was successful in creating this for an ADF and re-partitioned and re-formatted my drive. I then booted from WB3.0 and inserted the install and ran the install file. It started of and asked for the workbench to be un-protected and started copying stuff until it stopped with an error saying it could not copy to drawer. Well no files have been copied to my HDD and guess what..My WB3.0 disk will not boot now and only goes as far as AmigaDOS. I am screwed, it has corrupted my WB disk!!. Any suggestions (polite please I know I have screwed up!!) Also why did it not copy to the HDD, was it copying to itself??? HELP!! |

Before getting into this problem, can you try and hold both mouse buttons upon boot and disable your HD.
Then try and boot your 3.0 WB disk. EDIT : Oh yeah, and welcome to the forums BTW. Last edited by Bloodwych; 03 August 2002 at 22:42. |

When you partitioned your HD, what names did you give them?
For instance, mine are called: Partition 1 DH0: or System: Partition 2 DH1: or Storage: Notice you can give each one two names - one in HDtollbox and the other is the formatted name added by Workbench. |

They are called System and HDD
System was to be for the system and HDD for ..stuff. I named them that under partition and on desktop. And then formatted them |

If you get to AmigaDos (with the WB Disk inserted) just type : DF0:C/DIR DF0: ! If this works, the WB disk maybe allright if it displays some content ...

Hmm, your symptoms sounded as though you'd called your HD a workbench assign such as SYS: This can cause install problems and boot problems from workbench disks.
Now we have to take the hard route and to do that we need the dreaded details. Other members please feel free to jump in and help at any time! This is an Amiga soul we're trying to save! Let's start at the beginning. What install disk did you use? What utility? Did you auto-detect your HD model to enter it's physical details such as heads, cylinders etc? |

ok I got a wb30 install adf from the net as I did not have one in my set.
I booted from wb30 floppy, inserted the install disk and : firstly the HDD was already installed and is a 60Mb drive. 1/ I partitioned it to 20 (for system ) / 40 for HDD 2/ I then rebooted from WB floppy 3/ I then formatted each drive in turn..all ok. 4/ I then re-inserted the install disk and ran install 5/ it asked from WB and then ran the install prog. 6/ I then selected install and it asked things like language. 7/ It asked for WB again and asked for it to be write enabled. 8/ It started going through preparing Icons etc 9/ came up with error stating could not write to drawer and went back to desktop. Now I can only boot to amigados from HDD or WB floppy. |

If it asked you to deprotect the Workbench disk, seems like you tried to install, or something onto the workbench disk instead of the HD! yeah that is exactly what happened I think, it installed into the SYS; assign which, in this case, was your WB disk! Major mess.
Anyway, you HAVE to boot from the Install disk in order to install the Workbench. You shouldnt boot from the Workbench disk, then insert the Install disk and execute the script. I think you have overwritten some of your WB3.0 files or deleted them by accident by using the Install tool unproperly. Can you tell us which fiels does the WB3.0 disk now shows when you do dir? (BTW retro, isn't Dir a resident command in ks3+?) |

Yes, it sounds like when asked where to install Workbench, you've selected your WB disk!
Like Akira said, the install disk IS BOOTABLE! You are meant to boot from this disk to partiion AND install WB. |

Thats probably where my problems started.
My install disk would not boot, it went to amigados, so I put in WB booted from there and then inserted Install. At no time during install was I asked where do you want to install to...!! If I now do a dir of WB30 floppy : Classes(dir) fonts(dir) locale(dir) storage(dir) OLD(dir) Expansion(dir) System(dir) Rexxc(dir) Utilities(dir) L(dir) S(dir) T(dir) C(dir) Devs(dir) Prefs(dir) WBStartup(dir) Libs(dir) devs.info Expansion.info Install_log_file.info Prefs.info System.info WBStartup.info Disk.info install_log_file OLD.info Storage.info Utilities.info |

why not simply use an PC to Amiga tool and dump an adf image of Wb3.0 to a new disk?

The novice install will have chosen the boot disk, Workbench3.0:, as the default install path. Try and get into the habbit of always using the expert feature! Right, now you need a new WB3.0 disk................ |

Bloodywych nailed it. I made the same mistake... the good news was I duped the disk before I started and just made another copy (this was a little while ago). Expert is the only safe way to install it seems. At least it lists what it'll install it to and a list of optionals.

Ok. If you have no friends with Amiga's that can write/provide the disk for you, then I'll help you via good old snail mail by writing the disks on my A1200.
PM me if you're completely stuck. |
