The GamesMaster is No More

Sir Patrick Moore, astronomer and GamesMaster, has died. As well as providing game tips to Amiga and console players he also met Orville Wright, Yuri Gagarin, and Neil Armstrong and had a cat called Ptolemy.

He presented the BBC programme The Sky At Night from its launch in 1957 to the present day. Now he is travelling through the cosmos playing the xylophone.

Sad news indeed. He was my hero when I was studying!

In my fifth year at Grammar school, inspired by him, I asked to sit the Astronomy O-level examination on a self-taught basis, as did a couple of my classmates.

I passed the exam with an 'A' grade and, along with the Chemistry prize, won the specially-created Astronomy prize that year!

It raised a few eyebrows when the additional subject was announced at the prizegiving ceremony!

RIP Sir Patrick Moore.

What a nice guy I always thought he was a good sport playing gamesmaster. A man of his stature wouldn't have needed to do it, but he did anyway.

He brought a bit of depth to video gaming when video gaming was not respected in the slightest.

True legend.

Shit man, that is SAD news. I found out about this through this very EAB thread, so thanks for posting it. Anyone who Youtubes Sir Patrick Moore will find a funny video where someone animates his character playing the xylophone as he floats around space. I think that is how I'd like to remember him.

rip.

Sad for sure but he did at least have a good long interesting and influential life. I think just about everyone thought he was cool and that's hard in itself to achieve

He did that great opening speech in The Kristal which people probably remember more than the game itself

Always sad but lots to remember him by

Here in Perthshire it is the clearest and darkest night I've seen this year. I think the heavens are preparing his welcome party. On the most recent Sky at Night, during which he did not appear well, they showed that just before dawn on the 11th of December, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and a crescent Moon will all be visible in the same part of the sky.

A fitting tribute to the creator of the greatest TV show on Earth, available now, anywhere within 55 light years of Sol.
