Self booting hard drives and additonal kickroms
Ok following on from my various other threads, with the amiga and its kickstart/workbench configuration, naturally you have a kickstart chip then a workbench.
So with a self booting hard drive, I presume it looks for a diskette then a hard drive to boot from? I was under the impression you can get diskette roms too so you can boot a newer rom on an older machine (eg boot 2.04 on a 1.2 machine) can you do this 3.1? Currently I have a 2.05 amiga 600 rom in my A500, I have an external hard drive and a raspberry pi replacement drive, so it autoboots to the pi drive first, I select a diskette (normally and ADF file) and click go, it reboots the machine with a 'disk' in the drive and loads that. In the instance of having a hard drive too, I wondered if it might be possible to have a 3.1 boot disk, so that when it reboots it just boots to the hard drive to a workbench 3.1 install, even though I dont have a 3.1 real rom in place? I am reluctant to spend too much money if honest, so I dont really want to go buy 3.1 roms when they can be found online. |

Yes, you can soft kick 3.1. Get the skick package from Aminet. Mkick or zkick for a 1.3 machine.
Why would you load the soft kick off the floppy though if you already have hard disks. |

Well I was under the impression that if I wanted workbench 3.1 on my harddrive I'd have to boot from a 3.1 rom? Hench why I was asking the question really as my machine only has 2.05rom and I dont want to spend more on other roms.

Well, you can boot using the physical 2.05 or 1.3 ROM, and have the softkick as the first command in your startup-sequence. Then the machine will load the kickstart off the hd, reboot, then boot again into 3.1.

You can boot a 3.1 install with ks2.05 but you cant use the 3.1 installer to install it with ks2.05. You would have to Install it manually or probably use WinUAE.

Why not softkick the 3.1 ROM first from floppy, then install WB 3.1? :-D
After the WB is installed, you can copy the softkicker tool + the kickstart image to the HD. |

I don't actually know whether it's going to be possible to softkick to 3.1. It seems to depend on the MB revision.
