Sprites, Tilesets & Logo's

RCK,

Would it be possible to add a new tab for each game. (See thread title)

Currently we are ripping quite a few maps and such like, but there are a lot of sprites and sprite sheets that I am not ripping as I have nowhere for the to go (except my HD). Can HOL have this included in a future update?

Cheers

Yeah, sprites and logos/titles... guess it's a good idea to ask RCK about it. Will do so on the next opportunity.

Well currently I've not ripped sprites for games as it's sometimes a bit laborious when there's nowhere to put them. Same with map tiles too.

As the program gets better I'm sure it'll support more features and functions etc.

It really makes sense to store all of the game art on HOL A tab for all those in-game art would make a nice addition for sure (and it's also needed for scifi's title project).

Sprite sheets and tile maps on HOL would be nice for those wanting to side projects like sequels, or remakes etc

The only thing is, HOL usually has watermarking. maybe they could be uploaded in ILBM format and zipped? (Like game manuals are)

They will have watermarks, but a quick email will usually get you what you want

I hope to see something like that, in the near future, embedded in HOL...
Right now, as TCD said before, I'm working solely on game titles and the project is going considerably fast...
I'd be glad to see a new tab on HOL's database pointing to games art...

Won't that destroy the original palettes?

I absolutely understand why HOL watermarks screenshots and scans, but in my opinion it's unnecessary and detrimental to "preservation" to do it with sprite and tile rips.

Given that many of the sprite rips are already posted on this board, and will no doubt then just be uploaded to HOL with watermarking, it will be pointless for any end-user to use HOL, when the original, "clean" versions are already available.

I would consider myself a potential "end user" of such rips, but I have to say if the rips are not clean (and this is I would rather see ILBM files) the whole exercise seems a bit redundant...

Just my thoughts.

The watermarks are a pain for me too which is why Ive been grabbing Bippys maps when he attaches them to the thread. for my own purposes Ive also written a smal program that loads the map image and creates a unique tileset from it

Quick request/question for Bippy. Has the maps for Hybris / Battle Squadron been done yet?

I've not done them personally.

If you want any tile sets let me know and I'll save and upload them

The watermarks are an overlay incorporated via RCK's coding for the images etc, so the actual images are as original as they come, palettes intact when you ask the right person of course

To the original idea, sounds great to me Bippym Just hope RCK will make the necessary changes

Nico is (was?) working on Battle Squadron. The main chunk of the map is easy to find but some extras are missing so you get black squares in places where a tank comes out etc. You can get the majority of the map, but not the entire thing (cleanly anyway).

Although the original scans are on HOL without the watermark, I agree that these sprite sheet rips should not be watermarked at all. It makes them effectively useless once that are converted from clean 16 or 32 colour rips to PNGs with watermarks through them.

I am glad to know a few people are in agreement, but ultimately the decision lies with "the powers that be"

Some things to get the idea about HOL hosting those images:

- HOL is foremost a database about Amiga games and not really a preservation project. Everything that can be done to host material about games is a nice addition, but it's not the main goal.
- RCK is indeed 'the power that is' and we (also team members) can only suggest changes. Ultimately you'll have to address him to ask for a change.

It sounds a bit like HOL tries to annex these images, but it's really just a proposed enhancement and everyone is welcome to offer a different site to host them in a native format.

Yes, possible, PNG will be good, what should be the maximum size ?

They'll be sprite sheets I assume so I think size shouldn't be a major consideration. Although I doubt anything bigger than a standard desktop would suffice.

Now I am home from work I'll explain better.

Most sprite sheets will most likely be around 320x200/256. Some will be bigger.

I think png at whatever resolution is sensible is the best bet. If Maptapper has the ability to create a single sprite sheet from multiple offset sprites etc, then they could potentially be bigger than 320x256

1024x768 or even 1920x1080 would be the maximum required.
