Angry A1200 HDD Cable

Think I'm being numb here, but what the hell...?!

I'm trying to add a hard drive to a stock A1200. I have the disk (2.5" IDE drive), the cradle and a 6cm 44pin IDE cable.

I fitted the drive to the cradle correctly (only goes one way), and fitted the cradle into the Amiga (again, only goes one way). My problem is as follows:

Looking at the Amiga opened up, but as you would use it, pin 1 on the IDE controller is to the front of the computer. Pin 1 on the drive is to the back. It is physically impossible to twist the cable to get it fitted correctly. I tried red to pin 1 on the controller and fitted to the hard drive (red not on pin 1), on boot, the HDD light came on, but nothing happened.

Switching it around (red to 1 on HDD, not on controller) and it wouldn't even boot (well duh!).

Is the drive I've got not Amiga compatible? Is the cable wrong? It's doing my head in!!

Drive model is: IBM DBOA 2540

Cheers,

Badders.

it is possible to twist the cable correctly. maybe you used wrong screw holes on the drive ? try to move it little back to make space.
If there is no bootable amiga partition on the drive, it's normal that nothing happens. You should be getting to the kickstart screen. from there you boot with the workbench install disk and partition and format the drive and install workbench.

Sorted. I looked on Google for the drive information and pin 1 is the same orientation as the controller pin 1. There was an arrow on the casing which I took to meaning that "here is pin 1", as there was no other indication.

I refitted the cable, and it powered up this time, and WB 3.1 is fully installed and running like a dream. One of those things I guess

Thanks for replying.

Heh..

On a 3.5" drive, pin1 is towards the power connector.
On a 2.5" drive, pin1 is towards the four master/slave jumper pins.
