The reason this works is that the animation is not interlaced. The player just forces interlacing to be enabled globally. So it won't work (well or at all) for animations which are actually interlaced.
The latest version of ShowANIM I've found so far is 5.7x-02, in the
Rend24 archive on Aminet. I don't
think that has the force-interlace problem. However it annoyingly opens a window on Workbench even when run from CLI. [Is that an original/official ShowANIM version?]
