At one time, it was rumoured that Apple would release such a thing. Eventually it was reported that, in fact, the rumours were true and the project even had a name - "Marklar" (IIRC).
Of course, it turned out that the project was really the porting of OS X to x86 in preparation for the Intel-based Macintoshes.
