What happens if you pull out and re-insert the adapter, does it recover?
FWIW I had the same issue with my ACA1230 (well no PCMCIA cards would work), I never fixed it as my A1200 had the original eyetech fixes, I soon upgraded to a Blizzy 1240 so sold the 1230.
