Ah, I missed previously the palette cycling detail. Cool, I get it.

Note that visually you can get a legit result also by just shading the white color only. The curvature effect will be retained and the flat red will give a translucent feel to the ball.



While this might help I'm not sure it's a proper solution given your notes though.
If you're lacking copper bandwidth it'd be better served updating the other parts of the scenery over the ball I think (which is what the player will be focused on).
