I made them that way partly to help soften the huge pixelisation (I really don't like bilinear filtering at that kind of scale), but mostly because I believe a desktop background should be "in the background" and not getting in the way of icons and windows etc. To be fair, they're still quite "in your face", I should have maybe lowered the contrast a bit more.
